Thanks for all of the responses to my previous post regarding adding a front oil cooler... In my quest to remain cool I a came across an interesting concept in a VW interest magazine:
How often should a 911 engine be removed, the tin taken off and the cooling fins and engine mounted oil cooler be cleaned of schmutz? My "T" is 28 years old, has almost 80K miles and I can find no history of this being done... |

I've never heard of this procedure being done as a separate job on any 911. Every engine I've pulled from a 911 has been pretty clean in those areas, with the exception of a 2.7 that had been filled 4 quarts over. It was a little cloud-belching mobile Superfund site. I cleaned mine and there was so much dog hair in the cylinder fins you would not have ever thought anything like this was possible.

In my quest to remain anal, I must admit to having removed, with the engine in place, all the engine sheet metal, the fan, the complete shroud and oil cooler ducting and cleaned it. Most normal people would have removed the engine for this task but I insist on creating more work for myself.
So, yes, you can clean all engine sheet metal and probably improve air flow to the cooler at the same time. The neat trick is to have the sheet metal powder coated, it lasts as long as you own the car and is easier to keep clean. Bruce Herrmann 73911S |
