Over 30,000 folks die on our roads each year. I'm just glad you weren't one of them.
|
Mine was totaled - similar crease. What you couldn't tell on mine was that the rear of the car had been moved over to the left around an inch.
BUT - the doors still closed and opened - (and one of the heat exchangers was pushed into one of the oil return tubes (hence the oil) |
Wow, a lot of animosity by some toward "SUVs" (as opposed to the drivers), and the inclination to tax them off the face of the planet. I guess it never occurred to them that there is an equally invalid argument that fast cars (oh, say, Porsche 911s) should receive a similar progressive tax based on how much over the speed limit they are capable of. Glass houses, people, glass houses.
(Full disclosure - I have a Jeep Liberty 4x4 with LSD and trailer towing package. Very handy for pulling a trailer when I need to, pulling a boat up a slick concrete ramp, and fording standing water when we have our frequent tropical storms and thunderstorms, and less frequent hurricanes. And it gets about 20 mpg or so on the highway.) |
The main point here is the sad damage to a vintage Porsche and I am very sorry to see it. My sympathies.
I live in an area that gets ~120 inches of snow per winter, so while my 911 is snug in its workshop my SUV earns its keep. SUVs come in various sizes and mine is small and gets 30 mpg (US) on the highway. My wife's car is also AWD. We are on a dirt road way out there and can't live without the 4x4s. Oh, and as for the bars on the front, I have bounced deer off mine, saving me $$$ in body work. I agree - idiot drivers deserve our wrath, not a class of vehicle. |
All I can say is in Colorado being hit from behind is considered the fault of the driver who was behind you. . . hopefully the individual in question has current insurance and that you get this sorted out very quickly.
One of the first things I did with my '75 after driving it and realizing that I really needed it was (no, not attach a tall antenna with a bright orange flag to the rear, though that might have saved you) was fix the horn. These cars sit so low that it's easy for someone in a SUV or pickup truck to change lanes right on top of you. Even easier when they're on the cell phone. . . That horn has woken some people up this last month! Good luck getting her back on the road. |

Sorry about your car. I was hit a couple of years ago on the front left fender.
I am glad my Land Rover is not an SUV, it is a PAV, we use it all the time for camping out in the desert. It is very capable off road. |
If that was my car, I'd be hatin' on SUVs too. That STINKS.
Let us know how you fare with this. |
|
Very sorry about the damage to your 911.
However, to quote Rodney King: "Can't we all just get along." |
My condolences on your car.
In fact, all of them on this page. :( I blame the idiot drivers, not the vehicles. Although, some would say the same about vehicles with super-low ground clearance. Prepare to hear the sound of the vultures' wings flapping. |
Yup, it's the idiot drivers, not the vehicles.
Now......I wonder what someone might be thinking while criticizing vehicles with super-low ground clearance. Yesterday I saw three young men lined up against the back of a pickup truck, chatting with a state trooper, with flares burning all around. The young mens' heads came to about the halfway point of the tailgate on this pickup, while they were standing upright. So......the bumper was around shoulder-blade height. Does anyone think this is okay? Does anyone remember when vehicle equipment regulations were enforced? Does anyone understand what happens to the handling of a vehicle when its ride height has been changed by six inches......let alone sixteen inches? Heck, I should just tear the hood, decklid, fenders, quarter panels, roof and doors off my 911, weld in a roll cage and see if I even get stopped. |
Another SUV R.I.P. this week:
RIP 21687 - FerrariChat.com I agree ultimately it is the driver, but there does seem to be a rough correlation between certain types of drivers (and driver attentiveness) and vehicles. |
Ready to hear the forensics of the matter.
Glad no one was injured. Best of luck to you, Doyle |
Not totaly useless.....
SUVs that is. They make great tow vehicles and if needed can carry 7 or 8 people and their luggage. The diesel versions even get fairly decent mileage. As mentioned above, the problem is with the drivers, not the vehicle. My wife and I were rear ended while sitting at a red light (in our Excursion) by another SUV. Because of the size of the Excursion, the damage was confined to the rear bumper and neither of us were injured. The Chevy Trail Blazer that ran into the back of the Excursion did not fare as well, with the entire front end being mashed into little pieces. If I have got to be hit by another vehicle, I'll take my super sized SUV anyday! That way the SC can stay safe and sound for years to come.
Sorry about your car, having something like that happen really messes up your day. Hope all ends well. |
Here's mine... a hit-and-run while I was parked. :(

Makes me think my 911 is much safer as a track car than a street car.
|
That was a pretty low SUV, GTC. At least they left you some coffee! Just kidding.
|
Dang it, sorry about your car. I hope you're all OK. Cars, even as nice as yours, can be replaced, but you can't. I know, that's the way your family will see it. So try to look on the bright side, time to go looking for another car, another adventure. Peace and good luck. :)
