Just another alternative option.

Thanks for the pictures. I thought I saw a twin plug engine with one MSD unit and two coils once and just wondered if that would work. I guess it's two MSD units and two coils.

RWebb 09-16-2010 08:59 AM

it does appear to work - at least for a few years

you may be able to find a thread on it via search

That's what I have and it works OK. Problem with it is that half the available coil voltage gets to each coil instead of 100%. That means the spark is only half as strong at each plug compared to 2 separate MSD boxes. I'm going to add another box soon. But many would argue that the reason for the twin plug is a better and more uniform flame front and I agree. The lost spark voltage is not that big of a deal.

Advice: pay particular attention to the directions where they tell you to run the magnetic pick-up trigger wire from the dizzy separate from the rest of the MSD box wiring. This is critical. It's very tempting, for the sake of "sanitary" to pull all the wiring in one loom. Don't.

Coil is mounted in place of OEM coil, Mallory Hyfire contoller box is just bolted to the firewall.

Thanks guys. I checked with J&B racing as well. They helped me with the rebuild and ran my engine on their engine dyno. Jim said the same thing. For a street engine not running over 7500 most of the time including on the track, one MSD and two coils should be adequate.

Someone had suggested a cutting board....so I did it.

I installed it in the stock location. I did have to move the silver box over one slot, but that was easy:D

Makes me want to try my new cd box

All of these MSD photos makes me want to install my new Daytona Sensors CD-1 box. I plan to do some extensive testing to see how well it works in the 1973 911.

Has some interesting specs. Comes complete with matching coil. Can be used with points, hall effect [pertronix etc..] and even has a connector for CPS crank position sensors.

You can run it with mechanical advance, or program it for electronic advance as well as retard for boost. Also has 8 hours of data logging so you can see what is going on with RPM, boost/MAP timing.

When I get done with my testing, I am going to report back to Pelican and our host may carry it if all works out well.

This thread got me thinking about the location of the box. Even though I have it in the engine compartment now, I'm giving serious thought to moving it to under the drivers seat. I know from the MSD web site that the box does not like heat and the engine compartment gets very hot. I'm getting ready to pull my motor back out because of an oil drip that I just can't live with. I was talking with Henry Schmidt @ Supertec and we got on the discussion of MSD box location and his advice was to move it to under the seat. So it shall be written, so it shall be done.

sure seems like most, in fact the overwhelming majority, of folks are ok with them in the engine compartment. must not be too hot if they aren't all complaining about them not working there. discuss.

wjfk32 09-17-2010 11:06 AM

Yes- its an easier route....But heat kills everything in time........

Wasn't to bad as for the install--Under the passenger seat is your connection wires-, Plus I had my HKS-AIC connected from the front and back...

Best of luck. :)

If does the firewall between the engine compartment and the cockpit part of the car heat up if you remove the padding/dampening material that is glued to the firewall in the engine compartment. If so, would an msd unit heat up if mounted on the firewall in the cockpit? Would the airflow of having to keep the windows down keep it cool?
Thanks

Painted mine black and filed the tips of the cooling fins to expose the raw aluminum

I mounted mine under the front seat.. I guess I'm too old to hear the noise too.. I didn't need a tach adapter either..
