SC's - What wheels / tyres do you have?

Guys

Please help me decide on some rear wheels for my SC ....

I want to get either 8x16" or 9x16" fuchs, mainly for use on track - I don't hammer it but I do drive enthusiastically. I am trying to get an idea of what will fit without huge alterations or investment.

I have been told that with the 9" I may have to either use the same tyre as the 8", adjust the geometry or roll the wheelarch so that there is no rubbing.

Q - will I really notice a difference between 8" & 9"?

I would prefer not to alter the bodywork to fit the wider wheels, but I will stiffen the suspension. I will also be looking to change the sway/anti-roll bars - any suggestions here would be great.

Many Thanks

I switched to 930 Turbo rims, 7x16 and 9x16 with 245/45/16 rear tire. No problems at all. Car feels more controllable and more stable, although it follows the road imperfections more easily

I put 7"s/9" Fuchs on last year w/ 205s/245s (BFG g-Force KDs). These are much stickier than anything I had on w/ 6"s/7"s. Highway on & off ramps are a blast, but I wonder if an autoX will show this to exaggerate the tight corner understeering my SC used to exhibit. I'd love to get to another autoX to find out.

My '83 SC has 7" Fuchs front & 9" Fuchs rear (original).

Tires are Toyo Z Radial 600-C1's (PO put them on):
* fronts are 205/55 R16's
* rears are 225/50 R16's

It's a daily driver, don't put more than 5K miles a year on them, but figure to replace the Toyo's with P-Ones or Michelin Sports by year end.

Cheers!

C.

I don't have an SC, however, my .02

Get the 8" Fuchs.

Reasons against 9" Fuchs.

1) the 9" Fuchs are a bit heavier. This affects both handling and acceleration. Marginal but it does affect it.

2) the 8" and 9" will both use the same tire size 245/45 16. Hence, no noticable advantage there. I haven't found a better (larger) size tire that keeps the car's wheel diameters approximately the same.

For instance I have found 255/50 16, but then the rear end will be jacked up higher, the rim to tire size will look funny compared to the front, it might rub, and the diameter of the tire will slow the acceleration down, your speedo will be off more than it was, and it will look funny.

Reasons for 9" fuchs

1) they look GREAT!

2) I think they have a slightly wider track than the 8" Fuchs, not sure though....

After all that being said, I have the 9"

I keep thinking of selling the 9" and getting some 8" for the above reasons. Someday I will get better pics...

Nick - Exactly the reason's that I haven't decided yet and you're not helping much !!

No seriously - will I really notice a difference if they both have the same size tyres?? Apart from looks?

I may know of a set of 8 & 9's coming up next week so I need to be sure before I shell out the cash ....

m325ix - thanks ! it looks good .. is that euro spec height etc.?

I would think, you would get better performance out of the 8" in the rear.

I would REALLY like to try this though...

I'm running 16 x 7&8's for the street and 16x6&7's for the track. When I get new track tires, I will switch them around. I'm planning to use 225 up front & 245 in the rear.

7(+23.3 mm os) & 9(+15 mm os) x 16 makes a really nice combo with 205/55 & 245/40. They should fit with minimal trouble in the front and none at all in the back. The 9 is preferable to the 8 in the back because;
  • for a minimal wt. gain, the 9 stretches the side wall more than an 8 giving a lower height
  • the track is wider giving more leverage on the chassis for better lateral grip
  • the wider rim has more leverqage on the tire carcass giving better lateral grip
  • the 9 is a better match than the 8 for the lower prfile shorter 245/40 tires which are preferable
.

For even better track performance go with an 8x16(+23.4 mm os 944 rim) witha 225/50 tire. There will be considerably more trouble with the lips though.

For the true track junkie 8 & 9-10 x17 will fit with tires up to 245/40 & 275/40, but with considerably more problems not only with lips but also with trailing arms, oil lines etc.

On an '83 SC that I've taken up to maybe 270 hp, I'm running 7s and 8s on the advice of a number of very knowledgeable people. Partly because I'm bothered by the typical "If big enough is good, too big must be better" attitude (to which I've fallen prey myself numerous times in numerous ways) and because I think 9" rears simply look gross on that car, like putting a Turbo wing on a narrow-body SC or putting 993 or 996 wheels on a 911.

I just bought some 9" for my SC and I love them. 225 & 245 combo. Steering is heavier, but it rails in the corners! Big difference. I put my 7" on the front, but I'm debating whether or not I should get some 8" for the front. My reason is that I eventually want to upgrade my brakes, and I'm not sure if the 7" will fit bigger calipers...I heard that 8" are much better for clearance. Anyone have any thoughts?

The 944 8s will accommodate up to S4 calipers on 304 mm rotors, just what you want!! The 9s are good for any caliper rotor combo you could reasonably want, generally a little red and 309mm rotor.

7&9s have more inherent understeer than 8&9. Wheel width, t-bar, sway bar, air pressure, alignment shocks etc. can all be varied to tune in the handling characteristics you want. For street driving it makes no difference other than appearance but I really liked the basic handling of the 8&9 225/50 & 245/40 combo for track use.

The before shot with 6, 7x16. Current setup is 7, 9x16 with 205/55 & 245/45. You'll notice the difference when you upgrade from 7's to 9's but will notice that you have more control regarding oversteer. Oversteer was easier to induce prior to 9's. The 9's give more warning to oversteer condition. My 82' is a daily driver and the on/off ramps etc. are a blast!!!!

Regards,
Sean

245-45 and 225-50 on 7" & 8" X 16 gold BBS PimpDaddy Specials.

Slight fender rolling required on drivers side, car is pretty low.

Not an SC but same specs for wheels. . .

My current selection:

Street: 7/8-16 (polished with 225/245)
Track: 7/9-16 (anodized with 205/245)

The 9s in the rear "fill out" the rear fenders better than the 8s and anodized finished is easier to keep clean for track use. Plan to switch to Khumo 225/245 this spring (If only the wife could appreciate the need for increased traction - LOL).

Ultimate street choice: 7/9-16 polished
