85 911 clock

Hi folks, I have had my 911 for a month now and the clock is strange. It works fine when the car is driving but after a trip and the car off and parked, it stops in a few hours. Keeps great time while driving. Yesterday I took my meter and checked the hot wire to the clock while car was off and it read 12 volts. Any ideas? Time for a new or used clock? Thank's Nick

Just a wild guess, it's slightly gummed up and your battery is a little weak. Alternator gives a little more than 12v and battery may not give quite enough when off. Send to North Hollywood Speedometer for a cleaning.

Check you battery post voltage when car is off. Should be about 12.6 volts if fully charged.

Nick,

Not time for a new or used clock.

If you can start your car, your clock should work.

I suspect a loose or intermittent connection to, or inside the clock.

Start from the fuse panel and check for good fuse contact,
and that the wires at the bottom of the fuse are not loose.

On our '86 that fuse also feeds the interior lights,
glove compartment light and other items.

While there is 12v to the clock,
tap it very gently with the eraser end of a pencil.

If the clock starts up, you have your answer.

Pull the clock and send it out to be repaired.

Where ae you located?

Good luck,

Gerry

Gerry, I'm in San Diego area. I know what you mean about the interior and glove box lights. They both work but the interior lights only work when you turn them on, not when you open the doors. (3 way switch) Very strange because the buzzer works when you open either door. Only other elec problems is the speed control. When I set it it just starts to drop off after a bit. All other gauges work just fine and so does the sun roof and seats and other stuff. I'm on my way! I'll try the things you told me. Nick

I had the same problem on my car because some idiot alarm installedr spliced in the wrong wires. The whole interior light wire shorted out . In fact most the insulators had melted. I rewired that whole chain of wire. The resistance of that wire went up.

Nick,

Call Gary at Paul's Speedometer in Redondo Beach.

I've known Gary for decades, he is the best.

clock update

I took a 100 mile trip yesterday and set my clock and as I drove off it kept perfect time for the whole trip. Then when I got home and parked it worked great for about 5 hours till it stopped. All with perfect time. So this morning I checked the battery and it read 12.6 with car off. I think it's time I got my clock cleaned! Nick
