oil temperature

Hi all

Apologies if this topic has been addressed before, but I am wondering what the acceptable oil temperature range is for my car, an 88 911 Carrera, completely stock. Driving on the freeway (70-80 mph) in 90 degree weather last weekend the oil temperature gauge ran just below half way, and in similar such weather but in traffic the gauge occasionally moves to just above half. In colder weather it runs just above the lower hash mark. Does this sound acceptable? Too hot? Without knowing the temperature to which these gauge readings correspond, I am not sure where my motor should be running. Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

sounds about right, if you peak at your gauge sideways can you see any temperature readings? 180 is normal 250 is to damn hot anything in between is ok. do you have an oil cooler?

I guess the best way to discribe this is if the bar at the very bottom and just slightly above it is abou 140 ( let's say that's cold. )

Then the next Bar and just below that is about 194/5 aprox.

Then the next Bar from that is about 248. Above that god for bid you infact get into the last bar, but if you see the reddish orange and the car is still running " sacarstically " you have reached 302deg. If you are reching 248, slow it down back it off, and pull to a slower lane and hold a constant or steady speed in 5th at about 60-65mph.

Here in the South where I live we get summer days that reach 120 deg F, and it all depends on how long and how hard and how fast you are running in it. Different fuels respond differently too.

However you sound like you are alright. RStarga asked a good question. Oil Coolers are added insurence if you know you're going to be driving at a high pace or in traffic. ( Trust me ) I drive on average 220mi a day and have little choice but to deal with painful amounts of Orange Countey Traffic or LA traffic depending on what I am doing that day, unless I curse the world and simply check into a hotel.

90-110 is preferred, 120 is ok for short periods, 120 is too hot

w/ a full synthetic oil you have a larger margin of acceptable temps

Thanks, all. I do have an oil cooler, and it sounds like the temperature is about right.

Thanks again.

Andrew,

185-210F and your motor will last a long-long time.

You may want to replace your cooler fan sensor with a 210F unit.

The factory unit is set at 248F.

I installed one of these.

However BMW has a compatible unit.

Good luck,

Gerry

Nick,

You really owe it to yourself and your car to purchase a Bentley.

Try eBay, or do a search on the used parts section of this site.

You did not give us the model/year of your car.

This is for our '86.

As for your gauge issue:

1. Check the connection(s) at the sender and the gauge.

2. With the ignition "On" look for 12v on the GREEN/RED wire to the gauge.

3. If 12v is present, and the connection is good, the gauge may be defective.

Good luck,

Gerry
