Standard Porsche headlight "internal" assembly but with the fluted lens removed. Bi-xenon projector assembly purchased on Ebay <$100/pair w/HID bulbs but minus ballasts. Harness comes with the hi/low adapter relay.

OK, let me get this straight -
I can get this
VWC-111-941-037-C - HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY - BEETLE 46-66 / BUS 50-67 (LIGHT BULB SOLD SEPARATELY) - SOLD EACH

Put this in it
7 ROUND PROJECTOR HEADLIGHT 78-83 84 85 86 PORSCHE 911

and use my existing headlight ring and I'm good to go?

If so, thats pretty cool. I think if you look around enough you could find some projectors that are fairly simplistic and make it all look nice and tidy.

You got it, that is what I put together. Very simple and reasonable.

gsmith660 10-03-2010 11:18 AM

My H-1's are getting pretty tired it would be nice to find a set of used H-4's and do this to get a HID headlight.

Sweet!

Rothaus,
Did you use a projector with your stock Porsche headlight housings? Essentially you fit a projector into the buckey and painted it silver? Just curious. This seems like a great winter project and I'm gathering info for options. Thanks

Could you post more details on your changes and pics.

well no one has brought this up yet, so I will ask and maybe show some ignorance, but...

are there any issues with current draw on the wiring if going this route?

Great write-up!

gsmith660 10-03-2010 12:58 PM

I am liking this setup the best. I asked lateapex911 for some details hope I get them

gsmith660,
I think you answered my question for rothaus, thanks.

Shane,
If I'm not mistaken I think these (HID , Bi Xenon) actually draw less. That said it looks like there is some wiring that needs to be done to adapt them.

Great work guys. Thanks to all for sharing.

gsmith660 10-03-2010 02:56 PM

This has possibilities maybe.

This kit is a direct plug in to a H-4 housing all you would need to do is replace the H-4 lens with a clear uncorrected lens that has possibilites. I am doing some research here and there are a ton of these so called universal kits out there that would work for the older style sugar scoop style buckets with just a mounting plate and position it so you could add the fog light below it and I think would give a very finished look.

very cool

Anyone know I just saw these are made in china. Is the quality there? Am I going to regret buying these? Does anyone know where to get quality projector units that arent made in china?

mickey356 10-04-2010 10:32 AM

I think you might be hard pressed to find much that isn't made in China. I got a set of headlights for my other car a couple years ago and they were fine. Not the highest quality but acceptable.

turbochad 10-04-2010 01:00 PM

Or you can just add the HID bulbs to your existing H4 setup and add the ballasts. I have a friend who just did this to his 944 turbo and the light output and spread is impressive. I am thinking of doing the same. Less than $50 bucks, and keep the classic euro look.:)

gsmith660 10-04-2010 03:07 PM

I have H-1s and would like to keep them intact since they are in good serviceable condition but dont give me many options to put in newer lights that is why I will try yo find a used good set of H-4s and use them to install the projector.

I see a problem with this setup. Each projector will not support the low/high beam function provided by the stock H4 housing; it will only give you either the high or the low beam.
As pointed above by someone else, you may be better off getting the H4 HID upgrade kit and install in the original H4 housing. It is essentially a single HID capsule that goes in the place of the H4 bulb, and a solenoid moves either a cover to create the high and low, or in some models the capsule itself positions itself in relation to a cover to become a high or low beam. These are designed to fit in a standard housing and not a projector.
