On our '86 we have three shims between the pulley halves, and three shims under the cup. All six shims must be installed in either locations. Alternator belt Part #999 192 176 50. 9.5 X 710 mm. Good luck, Gerry

Sounds like the sides of the belt are wearing due to shims. There should be a total of 6 shims in the alternator/fan pulley assembly. These shims are used to get proper belt tension, but also to maintain the proper plane relationship between the crankshaft pulley and the alternator/fan pulley. If there are less than the required 6 shims, the relationship between the crankshaft pulley and fan pulley will be out of whack and you'll see accelerated belt wear.
To adjust the proper belt tension, you add or subtract the appropriate shims from the inside of the pulley half and put them on the outside of the pulley cup.

Is it possible that your fan pulley half has worn into the the mating portion of the fan. I have seen a groove worn into the fan side that then allows the pulley half to slide into it. It then becomes off-center and appears to be a loose fan belt, with the associated belt vibration, etc.
This is usually the result of over tightening the belts. Regards, al

Guess it's time to pull the fan, alternator and fan housing off the engine. First thing to check for is a worn rear bearing on the alternator, followed by checking the fan and fan housing for cracks.
