Wrong sun visors or rear view mirror?

On my '87 Carrera coupe the sun visors never cleared the mirror. I assumed a PO had replaced visors with wrong size. But looking at visors for sale on this forum they look like mine so I am beginning to suspect my rear view mirror was replaced and mounted too high.
Can someone with a similar car provide:
1. Distance from top of mirror mount to top of windshield.
2. The width of visors on the inside (narrowest) section.

I understand from searches on this forum that removing the mirror base can be delicate so I want to be sure that mirror height is the issue.

I don't have a coupe, so I can't help you with the measurements. However, it's also possible that the PO used visors designed for the cabriolet/targa. The coupe visors are different. I don't know how different, but I do know they aren't the same.

I had the same problem with my SC when I bought it, the mirror base had been re-mounted too high. IRC, the correct location is 80mm from the lower edge of the windshield seal to the center of the mirror mount.

another option

Regardless of the year there are some other ways to deal with sun visor replacement/improvements: 911 visors are wide from the door side to the clip and then narrow to the mirror. We removed the visors, stripped them to the frames and bent the narrow sections to eliminate that section. Then with heavy backing added padding secured with glue. A local upholstery shop wrapped them with black swede so they look perfect. With the narrow sections removed a space was created allowing a radar detector to be mounted on the driver's side at the top of the windshield clearing both the mirror and remodeled visor. The wire for the detector was routed around the windshield in the rubber. Now the radar detector is virtually invisible from out-of -car view and offers a greater scoping angle. Mounted high the detector's warnings are closer to your head allowing better volume and easier viewing. Tint on windshield does not inhibit radar detector performance.

same thing here.
My mirror unglued itself and fell off one day. went to a glass shop and they said they would glue it back for free. Was pretty happy untill i lowered my sun visor...

Still not siure if I have wrong visors or if rear view morror is too low.

Can anyone else give me the correct distance from windshield to moirror base?

Nope.

Different mounts, not interchangeable.


OK.

My PO mounted the mirror too high.

What I did with same issue:

Do not do this with a COLD windshield.

I removed the mirror; to get the puck off the windshield, my glass guy held a lit cig lighter under the puck, moving it slowly back and forth so a single spot on the windshield doesn't get too hot. With the other hand, pry very easily with a sharp x-acto blade until it pops off.

Scrape the adhesive off the puck, clean the puck and windshield with alcohol.

Now, hold the mirror up to the windshield with the visors full down. Locate it so that it works with the visors. Use a sharpie to mark the spot. Put an X on the outside of the winshield with the sharpie. Make sure it's centered L to R, also.

Ge the "Super" adhesive from Autozone or wherever, don't get the regular stuff.

Glue the puck on, follow directions as far as setting time.

Voila'.

You'll find that you actually have better visibility out the back with the slightly lower mirror.
