Type 4 VW Conversion into a 911
Hi all,
Im currently getting my 3.0 rebuilt. Getting everything done properly from the crank to everything including gearbox. My question is, how hard is it to put a beetle or type 4 engine in a 911? From the 912 engine bay pics I can see the engine mounts are more forward. Please dont flame me, just asking ![]() ![]() I've got tbitz efi on my 3.0, and i have a friend who is donating my a type 4 which id like to play with efi. or should i not bother and make an engine stand for the vw engine?? The 1976 912E (Type 923) is exactly this configuration. There is engine tin that fits the type 4 VW and the 911 engine bay.
It sounds like you have the EFI covered. The engine wiring should be able to be modified to ‘plug in’ to your 911 electrics. I would recommend adapting the engine mounts so you can use the 911 mounts and not try and weld something to your chassis farther forward. If you use your 915 transmission, you will need to ‘invent’ a pull-type clutch for the engine. You will also need to find a clutch disc that fits the 915 spline input shaft. The 912E exhaust will fit perfectly. This is a good solution to keep your 911 in service during the rebuild. It will also make you appreciate the rebuilt 3-liter even more. ![]() Best, Grady

your sure right about appreciating the 3.0 once its finished.
I just dont want to melt pistons while playing around with efi. ![]() ![]() where do you think i could find the engine tin needed? i will be using the 915 gearbox as i have 2 of them. is the clutch setup similar to the early 4 speed porsche gearboxes - pull type?? or can i use a kombi gearbox?? is it a straight fit? and also what about the drive shafts? Thanks in advance Oz |

I had a 912E a while ago. Awesome highway cruiser, getting well over 30 mpg. With the 911's large gas tank, it would just about circle the globe on a tank. Around town is a different story. The constant shifting is good exercise for mixing paint. Or maybe mixing paint is good practice for driving a 912 around town. The 912E's Type IV engine doesn't really develop power until above 6000 rpm. Unfortunately, it redlines at 5600. ![]() |

Well, this site has a 912 forum where you could ask any questions regarding the 912E.
The 912E used a unique version of the 915 gearbox with a different input shaft that mated to the 901/902/914 clutch disc. Finding all the parts unique to the 912E will be difficult if you wish to go that route, but it is a lot easier that trying to fit a type I. It might be far easier to fit another 911 6 in there.
