G50 transmission gearing question

My 1987 Carrera is an ROW example. Is there a possibility that it may have different gearing than one from North America?

Yes, it is possible. If you crawl under the car you can see if you have a G50/00 or a G50/01

G50/00= 3.5, 2.059, 1.409, 1.074, 0.861

G50/01= 3.5, 2.059, 1.409, 1.125, 0.889

Both have a final drive of 3.44

Thanks, Matt. I'm going to be doing an oil change today, and just so I don't spend forever under there looking around, where would I find the number?

The # is on the bottom of the trans, this is my G50/30

for '87 there were 3 G50 versions
G50/00 was used in Europe and most of the rest of the world
G50/01 was used in US and Japan
G50/02 was used in Switzerland

Matt posted the ratios for the 1st 2, the /02 is 3.154, 1.895. 1.333, 1.036, 0.861 again w/ 3.444 cwp

If you have an /02, congrats. Its the only of the three that has decent gearing. The others are rather poor for spirited use (ie track). If you like 0-60 sprints, /00 and /01 are not so bad. However their gear spacing rather stinks for track use IMO. On a fairly long fast track, you've basically got a two speed transmission and only occasionally would hit 5th. Overdrive 5th is not for putting down power, but for dropping revs to retain decent gas mileage.

Also check your serial number as Bill indicated for a #2 between the G50/## designation and the production #. The 2 indicates it was originally fitted with a limited slip differential.

OK, after rolling around on the ground for a bit, these are the only numbers I found on my tranny. Is the 950/02 really mean G50/02? This would make sense as it was a Swiss car, though I don't know off the top of my head if it originated there. I'd have to check the records.

I have no idea what all the other numbers mean, and it looks like the thing was stamped again with the 73H...

A 950 is a G50. A lot of the early G50s were 950s. People just call them G50s.

Cool. So it's a G50/02, then. I can live with that. The gear ratios in driving seem pretty good to me. The numbers between this and the /00 and /01 suggest quite a difference in first gear. I never thought that mine was rather tall in first. In fact, it seems about right or maybe I'm just used to it...

Thanks for the info.

For future reference if this comes up in somebody's search, like Wayne said the initial run of G50's circa 1987 had 950 instead of G50 in the serial number. Seems in '88 they changed the stamping to say G50. The H in your serial number indicates 1987 production year. J is 1988, K is 1989 and so on. I and the letter O are typically skipped to avoid confusion with #'s 1 and zero (0)
