Brake pad recommendation
Hello everyone,
I did a search but didn't come up with anything specific. I need to do rotors and pads on my 85 and am trying to find recommendations for street pads. I'm looking for performance with no noise and low dust. What do you guys like to use? Thanks

Mintex or padget (ones our host sells) are perfect for low noise and dust, good stopping cold, and cheap.

Great experince with Ferodo DS3000. Cheap, very good stopping power (high friction 0.6!) disc friendly, dust not agressive on rims. Work as well cold as hot.
The above mentioned experience in for road and track |

Street use?? Use Mintex pads. Excellent stopping power, no dust and rotor friendly. Cheap, too,..
![]() DS3000's are race pads and good for the track. Noisy for the street. Pagid's are excellent track pads as well.

Metalmasters are the lowest dusting street pads I know of. No noise whatsoever, last a long time and very inexpensive.
I've found the Mintex pads to dust quite a bit, same as the other OEM pads such as Jurid and Textar. |

Porterfield R4S (not R4- the S is for street and the R4 is for race and will not stop well cold.)

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I've used Mintex on other cars and wasn't that happy with the dusting. I have also used Metal Master on other cars and was happy with them so maybe I'll try them out on the Carrera.
What do you guys think about stainless braided brake lines and cross-drilled rotors on a street car? Any advantage other than looks? Thanks again

There are no advantages to braided brake lines and cross-drilled rotors on a street car other than looks.
I put on some OEM Textar pads all around on my 89 last Christmas. Not a squeak nor any significant dust yet. With a proper brake fluid flush and new stock pads, I have learned what all the love letters and gushing over brilliant brake feel and performance all those auto journalists used to write back in the 80's was about. After getting rid of the 964 brakes on front (that I bought it with) and replacing them with brand new stock calipers and discs and rebuilding the rears, I now have brakes than can be played like a fine musical instrument. Textar and Jurid are OEM and fine...but being German....tend to throw a lot of black carbon dust.
Repco "Deluxe" or Metalmasters are more dust-free and pretty easy on the rotors. I like the old-style Pagid Orange for dual-purpose light track ( DE) and street use.....but I sense there are now better compounds at likely better prices for stuff like this.

I just got Porterfield R-4S all around last week. No numbers, but my car stops WAY faster. No problem stopping cold, but there is brake dust. I waxed my wheels, so the dust brushes or rinses right off. It's well worth a little inconvenience for that kind of stopping power.

I put Textar's (Pelican was out of Mintex at the time) on my '84 a couple of months ago and I have never used a pad that put out so much dust, they squeal too. I hate them and will never use them again.

ebc makes a great pad
I use the ebc yellowstuff pad on my stock brakes. Track to street and not a peep from them. low dust as well.

I like Mintex on the street. They were fine for my first 2 years of track use as well, albeit with fast wear (about 6000 miles to 50%). Very gradual fade. Lots of dust, but it didn't corrode the wheels.
I ran Metal Masters briefly, and they were fine on the street, but they did not like track use. They faded quite badly, and their plastic anti-squeal-pad melted itself to the pistons and dust boots, making pad removal a chore. PFC97's were fantastic on track, and useable on the street (they don't want to grab when cold & wet though). Corrosive dust and pricey , so I'm saving my set for the track with the long straight (Grattan). (though I got mine - used - from a great instructor for some beer! Thanks, Mike!) Ferodo DS2500 seem useful on the track - haven't gotten fast enough to fade them yet, and indistinguishable from a street pad on the street. Some dust, but doesn't seem aggressive like PFC97. All the above seem very rotor friendly; only the PFC97s had any squeal, and it wasn't much.

One thing to remember, 55rag, is to make sure that your caliper pistons are properly aligned at 20 degrees. If that has come out alignment you'll get squealing and excessive dust from the vibration and excess pad wear. It's remarkable what a difference that makes.

I like my Mintex Reds. Seems to do well for my Street/Autocross car.
Lots of current discussion here as well:Opinions on brake pads. Mintex, Textar, none of the above?
