engine drop - can't pull engine away from trans
I'm in the middle of my first engine drop (engine only) and I'm having difficulties pulling the engine away from the transmission. I have triple checked to ensure nothing is left connected and I can wiggle the engine sideways without a problem.... it just won't separate.
Any tips would be greatly appreciated... snows coming!

engine
If its a 70 with the 911 trans, If I remember correct you have to turn the release bearing 90 deg. to get it past the fork, with a screw driver or the like (thru the small window upper part of back bone of trans ) then it will pull free

If this is your first, why pull just the engine? much easer to yank them both then separate out of the car.

If it is a 70 or 71, Mike is right but I believe you also have to relieve the tension on the pressure plate in three areas that are 120 degrees apart.
PM me for more details. Dana |

But, it's been awhile. I'm with James, if it's not easier to remove the trans and motor as a unit, it's easier to put them back as a unit. |

engine drop - can't pull engine away from trans
My experience is that you have to do one or the other. Just pulled my 70t motor two weekends ago. Turning the throw out bearing 90 degrees is by far the easiest way. Might be more difficult in the car though.

Thanks fellas,
I'll do as suggested and pull the engine and transaxle together.

Good! You'll be glad you did, and you're only 10 bolts away.

I just went through this recently with a '71 911t. With the 70-71 type 911 variant of the 901 gearbox you need to relieve the tension on the pressure plate springs to get the throwout bearing turned into position where it will allow the fork to slide off. At least that's the "official" way to do it. The procedure is explained in an obscure supplement to the factory service manual. I can scan and post it if you like. With the starter off you can access three holes evenly spaced around the pressure plate. You have to thread 3 (6mm if I recall) screws of the right length through little sleeves (a Porsche special tool, but they're not difficult to make from tubing of the right size). Tightening the screws draws the face of the pressure plate away from the clutch which relieves the pressure on the TO bearing.

engine drop - can't pull engine away from trans
I just pushed the clutch fork the opposite direction of the clutch cable tension (away from the motor) and it relieved the pressure enough to turn the TO bearing. Maybe I just got lucky.

Derek - I have dropped the engine and trans on my 70 a couple of times. You absolutely should drop the engine and trans as a unit and separate out of the car. The factory workshop manual engine section starts by stating that engine trans are always dropped together. You might get lucky and get them apart in the car but I can guarantee that getting them back together with the trans in the car ain't gonna happen. Once out of the car you will find two holes in the top of the trans. Using the holes you can move things around while manipulating the fork and bingo you will have separation. Have fun.

I did as suggested and pulled both together. It was then easy-as-pie to separate the trans from the motor, rotating the throw-out bearing as described, above. Having now done it this way, it "should" prove easier next time I try to drop just the engine.
Thanks fellas - this place rocks

Great- glad it worked, and thanks for the follow-up. Always nice to hear how the story ends.
