Chuck,
Thanks. That's the beauty of EFI/Megasquirt (he said confidently). You can define the fuel requirement and A/F mix along the load/rpm curve, using manifold air pressure, O2, temp, throttle position feedback, etc. If you would like to come up and check this out, on the engine stand, let me know. Once I clean it up a little, add a few more shiny bits and work the bugs out of the linkage, I'll be ready for show & tell. Regards, Al |
Great video...could have used some throttle blipping though.
Congratulations Al! |
Rich,
You caught me. I have been blipping like a mofo, but the throttle linkage was disconnected for this video.. I am in the middle of trying out alternatives. I had the Triumph throttle cables hooked up and working ok, but i'm trying standard Weber/Zenith linkage, as an alternative. But the start up and idle in this vid was so nice........ PS: I had just gotten the Idle Air stepper programmed in for cold starting.........works great and watching the stepper motor change position at different temps is very cool....but I am easily amused by this stuff. Here's your blip....a little earlier, running rich, and not dialed in as well. YouTube - EFI fire!!! Porsche 2.7 with ITB/Megasquirt - 1st fire up & idle |
this is what's next - DIY crankfire
This weekend I've started on the EDIS ignition part of this project. This will really clean up the front of the engine, by eliminating the coil and distributor...plus it allow you to program in the ignition curve. I have all the bits and have just started on modding the crank pulley with a 36-1 crank wheel. The crank pulley bolt was a beeeyatch to get off, requiring penetrating oil, heat, air impact, rinse, repeat....but finally I got the new stuff installed. I need to make a sensor bracket, but by next weekend I hope to have the EDIS installed, ignition curve programmed in...and running. We shall see.

Hey Al, always trying to reinvent the wheel! I do have this pickup bracket and 1-36 wheel you can use if you want. It fits on the dissy mount so no fabricating. here are some pics.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1289174352.jpg

nice parts
James,
Wow, those are beautiful parts and a generous offer. I'm not trying to reinvent the wheel.....not even the crankfire wheel. The parts I'm showing are sold by DIY Autotune, a Megasquirt, and associated parts, dealer. They are meant to be an inexpensive approach, along with the Ford EDIS system, to building a good, dependable, modern ignition system. I do want to fab the sensor bracket to fit the standard Ford sensor, so that if it's simple, anyone can do it. The Ford EDIS units are plentiful and a proven, dependable system. My 1st crankfire system, which I had installed on a 2.7RS spec engine, consisted of the crank pulley, sensor pulley and bracket from goingsuperfast.com ( or someone like that ) combined with the Electromotive HPX coil pack. Beautiful parts that worked very well.....but....and it's a big butt, I had many dollars tied up in that system. ( I sold it used for $800) This time I'm going for an equally good, functioning do-it-yourself system at fraction of the cost. It's in keeping with the affordable DIY focus of the whole project. DIY crank pulley and spacer were about $30, Ford EDIS was less than $100. That being said, I really like your parts.....and appreciate the offer.....PM me with the details. regards, al |

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1289090146.jpg Not THAT is hot! Reminds of the dead sexy Hilborn injection units used by hot rodders back in the day http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1289187003.jpg PS - put me in line for one of your first kits:D |
Juice,
You are the first one to make that link. I looked at some Hillborn stacks for this project........they are perfect and provide the combo of retro vibe and functionality that I am going for. I went to the Greenwood car show in Seattle, this summer and was blown away by the 50's and 60's street rods. I was very impressed by some of the of the details. No reason why the form that follows function can't be dead sexy. Regards, al PS: According to my calcs, the stack/intake length on this system is going to match the engine .........just about right. PSS: quite a stable you have there....the video of the 934 replica is impressive. |
Very cool project, I'll be following this one as well! Besides I have a 2.7 also.
James Brown: Are those the Rothsport parts, they sure look NICE. |
Al,
Looking forward to further updates. What size are the ITBs? Does Triumph make one suitable for a 3.6? Excellent work! Doug |
jmuRiz Yes, there Rothsport parts. they make nice stuff.
|
Doug,
Thanks for the interest. More updates are on the way. I am playing with some linkage options, this weekend, so i'll be in the basement machining, etc. Regarding the suitability for a 3.6. These are off of one of your larger Triumphs (955 to 1000+CC approx.) and I chose them because they are approx. 40mm., which in carb terms usually works well for up to 3.0 liter 911 engines......3.2 is probably tops ( I was thinking of all the 2.0 to 3.2 engines out there... with aging Bosch, Weber and Zenith systems.) I expect they are a bit undersized for your application, and I think they are the largest from that manufacturer...but I'll look into it and get back to you. Once this kit is debugged/complete, I expect that I will be designing my own throttle bodies as the follow on......along with a few other variations on the theme. I have a few ideas for relatively inexpensive and manufacturable designs. So much stuff to do...so little time...aaarrrggghhh. Regards, al PS: a 3.6 with ITB's would be sweet. |
EFI ITB...slight revisit
Thanks to James Brown (yes, that James Brown) for stopping by and dropping off a beautiful upgrade, to be used on my project. Fantastic crank pulley, sensor and mount, along with a EDIS wiring harness connectors etc. The crank pulley, sensor and mount are already installed. see pix below and the EDIS electronics and wiring should be on by end of Saturday or so. I also found a box on my porch with some nice Silicone boots/connectors for the stacks to TB connection. I installed those and to a quick look at a stack option or two (black vs. chrome). What do you think chrome, black, brushed??......................back to the garage.

Thanks Al, let me tell everyone that this is the "skunk works" of EFI in north America! We (Al) is on the cutting edge of DIY fuel injection R&D. the interface he pioneers with these classic engines and proven electronics and ITB's is nothing short of game changing. And this is just a "test mule" for products to come.
This engine (a 2.7) is out of Tony's car. A great build and read in his own post. Can't wait till there mated! Should make for some fun!!! Once again, the Pacific North West is the hub of development and advancement of our classic cars! P.S. Tony's paint is more awesome in person, just wow and I was blind foled prior to entering the secret location... |
Incredible build Al! I'm following with keen interest for the future of my SC. Oh, and for velocity stacks, I'm a real sucker for brushed metals, so brushed is my vote.
Looking fantastic, and like others I was truly stunned when I saw the video of the start up....I've never seen a Porsche engine jump to life with such ease and smoothness. Cheers! - CraigD |

couldn't agree more. I love the hotrodder spirit. There may be polaris or other small engine out there with appropriately sized ITBs for a 3.6. I am hesitant to pay several $k for the the ITBs and still have the unknown of the control side. A kit should be very attractive, but realize you are not going after the 3.6 market, first. Will stay tuned, Doug |
James.....thanks for the kind words, the beautiful parts and the visit yesterday. I just got in from installing the rest of the EDIS on the engine stand and when i went to turn the key.........nothing...check everything once, twice.....nothing.......nothing on the Megasquirt program dashboard showing any signals at all....reset the PC and ECU and ..ok the gauges come to life...yes, turn the key and my battery is too drained to turn it over....aaarrrggghhh...I'm in the house, warming up while my battery charges.....you know how this stuff goes. Stop down on install day. i'll keep you posted.
Craig.......The brushed look best, no the black,,I like chrome, wait....they all look pretty good, but I'm leaning towards satin black powder coat for myself, Tony is going for the chrome......... I guess I'll have to offer all three. Doug.........A 3.6 with ITB's would be scary ....I will keep my eyes open for the right parts. |
Get the bugs out and it could be a great replacement for the 46mm Webers on my twin-plug 3.2SS. As I already have an Electromotive HPV-1 would it be more complex/would I need to start over?
|
Quote:
You wouldn't have to start over at all. Megasquirt can be used to control the fuel and idle air, while your HPV-1 can continue to control the ignition. Regards, Al |
