My Triumph Speed Triple project update

or..... what I did on my summer vacation...........As some of you know i have been working on a DIY EFI kit. I've adapted Triumph Speed Triple EFI ITBs to the 911 engine, via weber manifolds, custom adapters, mounting brackets, fuel rails, etc. I was sidetracked for the last two years while restoring my 71E, but now it's EFI time. I was trying for retro-cool ITB's with modern engine management. I am using Megasquirt as the ECU for fuel, idle air and ignition control (as soon as the Ford EDIS system is hooked up). Tuning with a laptop.....gotta love it. I still have a few things to do, mostly cosmetic, wire routing, etc.....but for all practical purposes, this is a working unit....I am a happy camper. This rocks!!!!!!

I've attached a few pix, and a little movie, of the evolution...design thru fire up. Let me know what you think.

Regards,

Al

PS: Thanks to Tony Otero (Wolverine). He volunteered himself and his engine to Beta test this system. Big ones....that's his engine I'm playing with. We'll install this into his fantastic IROC clone project, this Thanksgiving weekend. Check out his posts regarding his IROC project.

Looking good Al, love to see that. I have a complete EDIS system, if you need it now

al lkosmal 11-06-2010 05:23 PM

Edis

James,
Thanks...I do have a complete EDIS or two, and have been working on the wiring, etc. today. I thank you for the offer, but I think that I am ok at this time.......I just finished the crank pulley today....should have the ignition system up and running by next weekend. Stop on by for a beer.

Hey Al...this rocks man...!! May I ask what did you do for a living in a prior life ie are you retired = where did you find the time to do this...WOW...
You are sure a smart guy to fab & make this all work...
I am very interested in one of your kits...please add me to your list when avail...!!
WOW...
Bob

Carrerax 11-07-2010 06:18 AM

Al, That is so cool!!!! Cant wait to watch the progress! U da man!

Joe Bob 11-07-2010 06:40 AM

Nice job, I like the flat black accents. I've never been a shiny metal kinda guy.......

356RS 11-07-2010 06:45 AM

Great progress Al. Another win for the NW group.

al lkosmal 11-07-2010 06:55 AM

Bob,
I am an Industrial Designer and currently I work as Director of Engineering for a little automotive, off-road/on-road trucking, sensors and controls company. In my spare time I design aftermarket parts for 911s. I have a dozen or so ideas.....and this is the 1st one to pop out. Not retired yet...but working on it.

Regards,

Al

PS: You are on the list

ratpiper71T 11-07-2010 06:57 AM

Wow! I watched the video and that started up and idled remarkably smooth...I guess I was expecting it to sound like a snarling badly tuned v8.

The inward tilt gives the intake it's personality all alone. Very menacing look, indeed- I like it.
I think you should develop some type of filters that can slip into those stacks if only to preserve that look, it's definitely cool.

Bravo, indeed.

Edit- I'm referring to the stacks in the last two pics

al lkosmal 11-07-2010 07:08 AM

Mark (Carrerax)..thanks for the kind words. I am pumped...this really runs great and I can control the A/F mix and ignition curve throughout the range.....at least on my engine stand. Next step is to install this into Tony's IROC and tune it up while driving.

Regards,

Al

PS: I've been following your build.......your engine is a work of art......you are setting the bar high.

al lkosmal 11-07-2010 07:11 AM

Joe Bob,
Thanks........I like the stealth.....satin/flat black too. I do .....however think that the chrome stacks add just the right amount of bling, so I'm keeping those, as is. With the foam socks on them, I think that they'll be just right. We'll see.

Regards,

Al

al lkosmal 11-07-2010 07:14 AM

Mark (356RS),
Thanks.....once I got the 71E on the road (thanks for the great job on the MFI pump ) this was the next project in the que. More to come..........what else will i do thru the PNW winter.

Regards,

al

al lkosmal 11-07-2010 07:18 AM

ratpiper,
thanks.....I am planning on filter socks over the top.....I have looked at a dozen or so likely candidates, but haven't purchased any yet. This is Tony Otero's (Wolverine) engine and I meet with him to review the choices, so that he ends up with something that fits into his vision of how his IROC project should turn out.

Regards,

Al

PS: If you see any filters out there that you think will work.......pm me with a link.

more to come.

Tooth911 11-07-2010 08:43 AM

Wow very cool Al iam running webers on a 2.8l .I love the top end but the 1800 to 2800rpm is not great.Cant wait to hear more Cheers Chuck

al lkosmal 11-07-2010 09:22 AM

Chuck,
Thanks. That's the beauty of EFI/Megasquirt (he said confidently). You can define the fuel requirement and A/F mix along the load/rpm curve, using manifold air pressure, O2, temp, throttle position feedback, etc. If you would like to come up and check this out, on the engine stand, let me know. Once I clean it up a little, add a few more shiny bits and work the bugs out of the linkage, I'll be ready for show & tell.

Regards,

Al

Rich Lambert 11-07-2010 09:37 AM

Great video...could have used some throttle blipping though.

Congratulations Al!

al lkosmal 11-07-2010 09:55 AM

Rich,
You caught me. I have been blipping like a mofo, but the throttle linkage was disconnected for this video.. I am in the middle of trying out alternatives. I had the Triumph throttle cables hooked up and working ok, but i'm trying standard Weber/Zenith linkage, as an alternative. But the start up and idle in this vid was so nice........

PS: I had just gotten the Idle Air stepper programmed in for cold starting.........works great and watching the stepper motor change position at different temps is very cool....but I am easily amused by this stuff.

Here's your blip....a little earlier, running rich, and not dialed in as well.

al lkosmal 11-07-2010 02:48 PM

this is what's next - DIY crankfire

This weekend I've started on the EDIS ignition part of this project. This will really clean up the front of the engine, by eliminating the coil and distributor...plus it allow you to program in the ignition curve. I have all the bits and have just started on modding the crank pulley with a 36-1 crank wheel. The crank pulley bolt was a beeeyatch to get off, requiring penetrating oil, heat, air impact, rinse, repeat....but finally I got the new stuff installed. I need to make a sensor bracket, but by next weekend I hope to have the EDIS installed, ignition curve programmed in...and running. We shall see.

regards,

Al

Hey Al, always trying to reinvent the wheel! I do have this pickup bracket and 1-36 wheel you can use if you want. It fits on the dissy mount so no fabricating. here are some pics.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1289174352.jpg

nice parts

James,

Wow, those are beautiful parts and a generous offer.

I'm not trying to reinvent the wheel.....not even the crankfire wheel. The parts I'm showing are sold by DIY Autotune, a Megasquirt, and associated parts, dealer. They are meant to be an inexpensive approach, along with the Ford EDIS system, to building a good, dependable, modern ignition system. I do want to fab the sensor bracket to fit the standard Ford sensor, so that if it's simple, anyone can do it. The Ford EDIS units are plentiful and a proven, dependable system.

My 1st crankfire system, which I had installed on a 2.7RS spec engine, consisted of the crank pulley, sensor pulley and bracket from goingsuperfast.com ( or someone like that ) combined with the Electromotive HPX coil pack. Beautiful parts that worked very well.....but....and it's a big butt, I had many dollars tied up in that system. ( I sold it used for $800)

This time I'm going for an equally good, functioning do-it-yourself system at fraction of the cost. It's in keeping with the affordable DIY focus of the whole project.

DIY crank pulley and spacer were about $30, Ford EDIS was less than $100.

That being said, I really like your parts.....and appreciate the offer.....PM me with the details.

regards,

al

PS - put me in line for one of your first kits:D

al lkosmal 11-07-2010 09:13 PM

Juice,
You are the first one to make that link. I looked at some Hillborn stacks for this project........they are perfect and provide the combo of retro vibe and functionality that I am going for. I went to the Greenwood car show in Seattle, this summer and was blown away by the 50's and 60's street rods. I was very impressed by some of the of the details. No reason why the form that follows function can't be dead sexy.

Regards,

al

PS: According to my calcs, the stack/intake length on this system is going to match the engine .........just about right.
PSS: quite a stable you have there....the video of the 934 replica is impressive.

JmuRiz 11-08-2010 09:35 AM

Very cool project, I'll be following this one as well! Besides I have a 2.7 also.

James Brown: Are those the Rothsport parts, they sure look NICE.

DW SD 11-11-2010 01:58 PM

Al,
Looking forward to further updates. What size are the ITBs? Does Triumph make one suitable for a 3.6?

Excellent work!

Doug

James Brown 11-11-2010 03:12 PM

jmuRiz Yes, there Rothsport parts. they make nice stuff.

al lkosmal 11-11-2010 06:13 PM

Doug,
Thanks for the interest. More updates are on the way. I am playing with some linkage options, this weekend, so i'll be in the basement machining, etc. Regarding the suitability for a 3.6. These are off of one of your larger Triumphs (955 to 1000+CC approx.) and I chose them because they are approx. 40mm., which in carb terms usually works well for up to 3.0 liter 911 engines......3.2 is probably tops ( I was thinking of all the 2.0 to 3.2 engines out there... with aging Bosch, Weber and Zenith systems.) I expect they are a bit undersized for your application, and I think they are the largest from that manufacturer...but I'll look into it and get back to you.

Once this kit is debugged/complete, I expect that I will be designing my own throttle bodies as the follow on......along with a few other variations on the theme. I have a few ideas for relatively inexpensive and manufacturable designs. So much stuff to do...so little time...aaarrrggghhh.

Regards,

al

PS: a 3.6 with ITB's would be sweet.

al lkosmal 11-12-2010 04:24 PM

EFI ITB...slight revisit

Thanks to James Brown (yes, that James Brown) for stopping by and dropping off a beautiful upgrade, to be used on my project. Fantastic crank pulley, sensor and mount, along with a EDIS wiring harness connectors etc. The crank pulley, sensor and mount are already installed. see pix below and the EDIS electronics and wiring should be on by end of Saturday or so. I also found a box on my porch with some nice Silicone boots/connectors for the stacks to TB connection. I installed those and to a quick look at a stack option or two (black vs. chrome). What do you think chrome, black, brushed??......................back to the garage.

Thanks Al, let me tell everyone that this is the "skunk works" of EFI in north America! We (Al) is on the cutting edge of DIY fuel injection R&D. the interface he pioneers with these classic engines and proven electronics and ITB's is nothing short of game changing. And this is just a "test mule" for products to come.
This engine (a 2.7) is out of Tony's car. A great build and read in his own post. Can't wait till there mated! Should make for some fun!!!
Once again, the Pacific North West is the hub of development and advancement of our classic cars!

P.S. Tony's paint is more awesome in person, just wow and I was blind foled prior to entering the secret location...

Craig_D 11-12-2010 05:05 PM

Incredible build Al! I'm following with keen interest for the future of my SC. Oh, and for velocity stacks, I'm a real sucker for brushed metals, so brushed is my vote.

Looking fantastic, and like others I was truly stunned when I saw the video of the start up....I've never seen a Porsche engine jump to life with such ease and smoothness.

Cheers!

Al,
couldn't agree more. I love the hotrodder spirit. There may be polaris or other small engine out there with appropriately sized ITBs for a 3.6. I am hesitant to pay several $k for the the ITBs and still have the unknown of the control side. A kit should be very attractive, but realize you are not going after the 3.6 market, first.

Will stay tuned,

Doug

al lkosmal 11-13-2010 02:40 PM

James.....thanks for the kind words, the beautiful parts and the visit yesterday. I just got in from installing the rest of the EDIS on the engine stand and when i went to turn the key.........nothing...check everything once, twice.....nothing.......nothing on the Megasquirt program dashboard showing any signals at all....reset the PC and ECU and ..ok the gauges come to life...yes, turn the key and my battery is too drained to turn it over....aaarrrggghhh...I'm in the house, warming up while my battery charges.....you know how this stuff goes. Stop down on install day. i'll keep you posted.

Craig.......The brushed look best, no the black,,I like chrome, wait....they all look pretty good, but I'm leaning towards satin black powder coat for myself, Tony is going for the chrome......... I guess I'll have to offer all three.

Doug.........A 3.6 with ITB's would be scary ....I will keep my eyes open for the right parts.

GaryR 11-13-2010 03:52 PM

Get the bugs out and it could be a great replacement for the 46mm Webers on my twin-plug 3.2SS. As I already have an Electromotive HPV-1 would it be more complex/would I need to start over?

Gary,
You wouldn't have to start over at all. Megasquirt can be used to control the fuel and idle air, while your HPV-1 can continue to control the ignition.
