Dan McGloughlin / AIR died today
From either a health or fall, Dan passed away today.
He originated the American International Racing business with Porsche customizing, car building, fiberglass parts business that was known world wide. From 911R thru 935, he was a fountain of creative energy. He was always looking for a "born in the usa" body version that could out perform europe's best. Besides the 911, 914, and 928 kits, he designed / co designed some of the fastest bodied 935s. As the racing business waned with the introduction of the 962 and other prototypes, his interests went elsewhere , where he excelled as well. He was always willing to " hold court" when you came to visit his shop, showing you how and why he built body kits the way he did. Personally he helped me achieve the various mods on my racing 911's early on. Thank you Dan ! You were a big influence in my Porsche life ![]()

I bought an IROC tail from him some years back. He was more than willing to discuss this and other subjects in some detail over the phone with a stranger and small potatoes customer.
Sorry to hear this. Is anyone carrying on the AIR business? Or has it been gone a while now anyway. |

AIR is still in business. John Brewer, who was Dan's last employee, went with the biz to Hanneman Fiberglass. They have a website (AIR) and sell from the old molds. They have made some new molds for the most popular parts, but some of the older units are not yielding easy to fit pieces.
Then again not all cars are straight that people put glass parts on either They make some of my parts from our own molds that i keep there.

Dave,
I just received your email with the news. I spent some time with Dan at his old shop and the new one . John Brewer made new parts for the El Salvador 935 with Dan's M16 bodywork for me when I restored it and back in 2000 Dan gave me the GTR 993 bodywork for my yellow and purple car that was in all the magazine around the world. Dan was an interesting and awesome cat. I always enjoyed talking to him ,my last conversation being in 2008 after I bought the Clif Kearns / Marty Hinze DESPERADO 935 that Dan had worked on . It is a shame he never sat down and wrote a book because he had so much knowledge and so many great stories . Just a great guy .. I will miss our occasional talks . He is a real and significant part of Porsche 935 history Here is some of Dan's handywork I have had the pleasure of owning and racing over the years..... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Remember this one Dave.. Dan's bodywork on my 934 at your gig in 1996 in Ensenada .. Dan's killer 914 bodywork on Super Dave Evans car behind me ![]()

Yep- Dave's purple 914 monster. I have a roller with that bodywork (for sale) at my shop now
Thanks for posting the pics. One of the most significant 935s was the Glenn Blakely chassis 935 for Meister/Andial. Dan did a narrowed K3-ish bodywork for it in record time. The car went on to win Daytona 24 while in Preston Henn's ownership. The M-16 and K4 looked like battleships compared to it

Don't forget the Andial/Meister M16 he did that kicked butt.... that car was awesome
![]() I think this is the 935 you are talking about.. Preston still owns it ![]() ![]() Dan's shop was a treat... he had an old school gas station setup inside of it and I think it had a blown 55 chevy cop car sitting at the pump ... and the entrance was a Bob's Big Boy

Sad to see a part of history lost, along with a great friend to many - my condolances to his family and friends...
Let no one take any day for granted. Godspeed Dan.

I ordered some parts for my 914 about 20 years ago, Dan answered the phone and it was a shock to me to be talking to him. And then I almost couldn't get him off the phone. I should have talked longer to him.
He was also partnered with actor James Garner on some projects I believe.

Thanks for letting us know Dave. I would buy a lot of parts from Dan in the 80's and 90's and got those specials tours every time I was there. He will certainly be remembered as a good guy who didn't mind helping and answering Porsche questions.
Sad day. RIP Dan.
