question on upgraded chain tensioner
i was told today that my 85'targa does not have the upgraded hydraulic timing chain tensioner.
how "unreliable" is the original tensioner compared to the hydraulic setup? it's running fine and such, but if i can eliminate a future problem because of this i think it would be wise to upgrade. thanks in advance and any opinions welcome ![]() bell 85' 911 targa |

cool, thanks.
i was told this by an ex-porsche tech, he was a little older so maybe he retired before 84 is there an easy way to ensure my 85' has this without taking anything apart? thanks again bell 85'911 targa |

It is really easy to check, if there is an oil line going into the front timing covers, you have them.
The thick brass line feeds oil to the cam, the thin line that branches off feeds the tensioner. Here is a pic: Tom |

Beware of the ex-Porsche tech that doesn't know what a pressure fed tensioner looks like.

I haven't seen another SC to compare my tensioners to, but comparing mine (below) to that picture I think I do have the updated ones. What do the standard SC tensioners look like?
This could be a few hundred quid off my P-Car wish list!

Chris,
You really should install the little brackets that hold the oil lines in place. It is my understanding that without them, they tend to fatigue from vibration.

Graham,
Are these original Porsche parts that I could order from my local Porsche dealer or do I have to fabricate them?
