Unhappy The bug is still there...

I tell you... it hasn't stopped. I still want a coupe.

Actually I want a coupe BAD.
What should I do? This isn't going to go away.
I don't want to sell my targa... I've put too much work into it.

the truck... well piss on the truck... if someone told me they'd take it, I'd have the papers to 'em before lunch.
To turn around and buy a coupe with the money anyway.

My heart actually aches when I look at some of these beautiful cars f/s on the web.

I want a coupe.

I want a coupe.

Damn, I want a coupe.

You only live once...right?

If you want a coupe but you still need 4x4 then there's only a few choices.....
Guess with Airforce dollars you'll be starting at 964 carrera 4 and working up .............

Unless you have a secret stash - then get it on and buy that 959 - hell you could always fit a tow bar

One side of me say... hey,... no problem...sell the stinkin' truck, buy a coupe... live happy.

Then the more realistic side says... "sell your 2 yr old truck for a equally priced 15 to 20 yr old sports car???"

Actually let me rephrase that... "sell your truck for ANOTHER 15 to 20 yr old sports car???"

I guess a part of me can just see the look on my fathers face now... "Are you crazy son?"

I just don't think I could bear to sell my Targa. I love that car... it's all I could ever want it to be........except for the fact that it is not a coupe.

What should I do???

Step 1: Buy roller or ratty coupe with sound tub for cheap.
(as long as it has the galvanized body - Dare I say it - even a late 2.7 CIS ?)
Step 2: Swap parts

Step 3: Sell Targa

Economically, it's not hard to make the argument for the coupe. Think about it, in 5 years or so, what is the value of that truck? Probably a good 60% lower than what it is now, if not 75%. Meanwhile, the venerable 911 will surely be worth almost, if not more, than what you paid! Tell that to Dad, he'll be proud. Life is short....enjoy it!

Yep, you're right.
I will sell the Voyager before it bleeds me dry in depreciation.
Now what to get instead........I only need 3 seats, well 4 if the dog comes along..

Leland,
I know how you feel. I want another car bad too! But I'm waiting for one of my houses to sell

I went and looked at new boxters and BMW 330i's. But for the money, I could practically restore my SC and buy another 911. Either SC, pre-73, or 3.2 Carrera. and have twice the fun! So that's what I'm leaning to once my house sells.

I have pursued and owned each type. And so far, hands down, the most enjoyment has been the cab. It is also the first with a G-50 and a 3.2 as well, and that makes a big difference.
Regards,

Leland, last October I was exactly where you are now. I had a 72 911E Targa, a car that a couple of posters have said is their dream car. I liked it, but really liked the lines of a coupe. The more I looked the more I wanted. I finally quit listening to everyone else and listened to my heart (this sounds like a love story and it kinda is). Then out of the blue BK911 says "I have a Coupe and want a 72 targa." As you know I now own that 86 Carrera Coupe. This is now 4 months later and every day I see that coupe (and I drive it daily) I know I made the right decision for me. Oh, and one thing that was keeping me back initially is that "I put too much into" my targa. You're young, you can afford to make a few mistakes. I say if you really want that coupe, then sell the targa and don't listen to all the naysayers.

I think it you have spent too much time in the desert.

Repeat after me.

There is no better car than an SC targa.

Lee, sell the truck. Buy a coupe (even if it's a minor project) and an older truck (if you really need a truck). Fix 'em both up.

You see how easy it is to think when you're out of the glare of the hot desert sun?

DO IT DO IT DO IT BUY A COUPE, KEEP THE TARGA

This is America, keep em both. You need the truck in case you need beer when working on the 911's.
Buy a coupe. You have an sc targa, buy a real old coupe. You may afford that and then will live both ends of the spectrum. I know how you feel, I have a 72 E coupe and I think it would look better sitting next to an old targa instead of my 5.0 mustang. So the Mustang is going ( to buy a minivan for the wife and kid expected Feb. 24th) and if I find an old targa cheap enough, I'll do it to. You only live once. why not be happy.

Were you thinking these thoughts while fixing your wheel bearings?

Also, get real

L: I admire the sentiment of those who say "keep targa, buy coupe," but also having once been an underpaid military young-un with a Porsche adiction, I know it honestly is not practical to own 2 Porsches and another car. The carrying costs like insurance, storage, etc. will add up, and prevent you from doing what you really want to do.
I own three Porsches now, and though I love them, it is a pain in the a**, and costs almost as much to keep them as to keep 3 kids. I will trim down to two; I recommend you keep the Porsche count at one, even though it doesn't sound as cool as two.
Best,
D

That's a pretty drastic measure, getting rid of one of the kids to keep 3 Porsches.

Why I'm offering advice to the leader of the underworld is beyond me, but you are a fellow Targa owner so here goes:

1. Search the PP archives for the infamous Mark Donohue 1969 Car & Driver article.

2. Print out a copy.

3. Read it aloud 25 times.

4. Think back to those cool summer evenings - top off, windows down, wind in the face - on a curving 2-laner with the flat-six singing loudly in the background.

5. Repeat steps 3-4 until you get this coupe nonsense out of your head.
