So what did I break?
I was at an auto-x on Sunday, and the car was running great. As I was going through the course I was making a left turn and it started making a waa waa waa sound kind of like a dead wheel bearing or a UFO. It only or mainly did it when I made left turns and did it but not as bad when I made right turns. So my thought was a wheel bearing was toast. I parked it finished my day riding with students thinking nothing of it.
I decided to limp it to a gas station outside of the track to have it towed and no more than 500 feet outside of the Auto-x area I drive it and the sound isn't really there, I shift to second and hear a grinding noise and then the car revs but goes no where. I thought it could be the clutch, but even at a stop if I put it in first and release the clutch I can hear it grab something and it's spinning while the car still goes no where. The transmission still cleanly shifts in all gears. Any ideas of what I broke? I'm going to pull the engine and trans in a couple of weeks after I gather the necessary stands etc. |

Sounds like a CV or throwout bearing?

I was thinking a CV joint since my box is open and all the power would go to that broken CV.

A bit of car info (year, model, etc.) would be helpful. It could possibly be a broken differential or sheared ring gear bolts- if you suspect the transmission, drain the oil and look for broken bits on the plug magnet, or metallic glitter.

T77911S: Thanks I'll check it out, and I hope you're right
Werkstatt: Sorry about the lack of information. 1976 911S with 73 915. It's making about 200whp and lowered to a little lower than euro spec |

Obviously, check the CV joints first, they're the most accessible.

To be honest Pete I don't know, I bought the car like this. It was set up pretty well so I'm thinking the clutch has been upgraded like the rest of the car. It's stiff and grabs very well. I'm hoping When I check the CV's that they're thrashed so that the car doesn't have much down time.
I'm thinking it's either the CV joint or the diff since the clutch still engages and the transmission feels the same. |

Visually check the bolts that hold the axle (cv joint) in. You just might need to re attach it back to the transmission. But use new bolts and washers. And if it is, you might want to check out the lock-bolts someone is selling on here. Or get some drilled bolts and safety wire them yourself, or quit racing. I heard somewhere that racing is expensive and not forgiving.

Thanks for the advice I'll check them first. As for quitting racing, I'm a glutton for punishment and actually having or saving money is overrated ![]() |
