Broken Valve Spring

Anyone have a good thread on replacing valve springs and retainers on a 3.0? I did a search and have not found a good step by stepper on this.

This one has good info but I'm looking for a little more...
Broken valve spring? Valve cover surprise.

The motor is out of the car. Is this pretty straight forward? I know to rotate to TDC on each piston and then make sure the piston doesn't drop into the combustion chamber, but i don't want to use compressed air and it would be nice to see how others did this.

Much obliged.

I am by NO means any kind of accomplished DIYer but I think this is one of those things where if one spring broke it's probably best to replace all of them, not to mention the conditionof the valves themselves, etc... I guess what I'm saying is I think most folks send the heads out to a reputable shop and have everything checked and redone if needed.

I plan on doing this myself. I know it isn't that hard. i don't want to take the cam towers off. I'm just wondering if anyone has a list to follow to make the job easier for me.

And yeah, I agree about changing all of them. I know the SCs had a bad run of valve springs and this isn't uncommon.

Hey Packy,

That was me in the thread you listed. I used one of the lines from a Harbor Freight compression test kit to pressurize the cylinder. Easy.

You don't have to remove cam towers -- just the rockers. That's not hard either.

I'll pm my contact info.

Found broken parts in engine

This is what I did.

Broken valve spring? Valve cover surprise.

post 50 on the above thread walks one through the process. Spend the time and step through it. It is actually fairly easy.

Good luck.

He has the thread- look at the first post. He said he wants more info than that thread can provide.

I think I can figure it out from here. Once the valve springs are out I'll just tie the valves up so I don't have to keep constant pressure on the valve from the combustion chamber. I'm going to take all the springs off before I order new ones so leaving the compressor hooked up wasn't an issue. I want to see what is wrong and which parts need to be ordered after all the springs are out so I'm not doing them one by one.

I'd replace all the springs with better ones from EBS. I would use air to hold the valve when you use the spring compressor, then put a rubber band on it to keep it up while you wait for parts.

Jerry,

With the EBS springs (not stock?), do you also need to get the spring height measurement tool and be prepared to adjust with shims?

Or you could take the initiative to say that you are going to replace all the springs and leave them intact, order new springs, wait for their arrival and then tackle them one at a time.
