ducktail ctr/997rsr build thread

Since my session timed out by the time I tried typing this up before important points first:

non-sunroof 912e

bolt on plastic undertray for the whole bottom of the car

10.5 and 11-12 inch flares

subaru motor (cheaper in the long run if I ever need to replace it)

gt racing bumper for 11 inch flares cut out to resemble the 997 rsr "smile"

plastic/rubber sideskirts/rockers

ducktail

antenna changed to central roof antenna

electric power steering

flat yellow on flat black paint, white or black wheels

more to come later

pot shots, feedback and opinions welcome

PLEASE do not move to 912 forum where this thread would rot away from lack of feedback

Why are you making a 997? Why not a wide-body yellowbird?

Speaking of 997 ducktails... does anyone know of any domestic manufacturers making a replica of the "997 Classic" ducktail that the factory introduced recently?

sounds like a very labor intensive project. is this just for fun or for a specific competition class?

in my opinion, no reason to substitute a non-porsche motor when you're going to such great lengths for the rest of the car. Call me a purist, but just my 2 cents.....

Doing all the bodywork myself. not sure how much of the swap I'll do myself. including the cost of the car I should be able to keep it under 15k total including bpdywork and wheels to fit the flares. and between 20-25k total if I include other upgrades such as suspension, brakes, power steering, and the engine swap.

as for a porsche motor... i should hopefuly be able to learn to maintain it myself without a shop. But it's about cost. Cheaper now and cheaper in the long run as far as I know for a subaru. but a subaru doesn't look like a porsche 911/912 and thats why I didn't buy a subaru instead.

Because i don't like big wings. I might use the yellowbird front bumper, but biggest I'll go is an idea I've had of an x-large ducktail with a built in wing. a ducktail with somethin like the adjustable spoiler part from this that's sticking up in the back

and why styled after the 997 rsr? Because i like the way it looks and I like the idea of a car with a smile.

Fair enough. Are you talking about something like the Singer 911's wing/spoiler?

I think that would look silly, especially on a wide-body. You should either do a simple ducktail or one of the ducktail+banana wing setups if you track the car.

I'll probably just buy a regular ducktail and play around with the idea using the stock lid

nice, I admire the ambition.

I'm in the middle of a group 5 BMW 320 replica build. I've already got the front fender flare plugs made, now I just need to make composite flares.

share your secrets and techniques. are you doing a lot of composite work?

So would your banana wing be removable? If you think a Yellowbird tail is too large, then I would think you would only be using the wing for track work.

There is someone here on Pelican who put a ducktail on, then had removable wing stays with a home-made carbon fiber airfoil. I lost that photo with my laptop's hard drive.

are you going to be building a fully custom body with steel? ABS plastic? composites like fiberglass or carbon? how are you laying it up? how are you curing it? are you molding?

only asking because a fully custom body can be a hell of a lot of work, and carbon fiber requires heat and pressure to cure from what I've read.

if you're riveting pre-made flares to the fenders, then that's a piece of cake.

airfoil... sounds like the term I'm looking for for that x-large ducktail idea.

no bananana. just a duck with the outside area of the duck black and the scooped area yellow

doesn't sound like function is the priority here, I think he has an idea of what he wants it to look like and ........

Best of luck with the endeavor ...
