Who is running an MSD? Matching Coil too?
It's only a matter of time before my CDI box goes out and I can't see spending hundreds of dollars patching it back together so I am thinking MSD. Used to be the 6AL was the one to have, is that still the case? I'm also told there is a "better" coil to go with it, one that can be mounted on an angle or whatever. Which one is that?

In looking at the MSD site I think this would be my choice - MSD 6ALN Ignition Control - 6430

MSD 6AL with High Vibration Coil (epoxy filled). Also, consider the selectable Rev Limiter instead of the individual "pills". Mine is located on the dash so I can give myself another 200 RPM if I need it at an autocross.

Is that the "Blaster" coil Howard? Seems like that is the logical choice. I chose the 6ALN because it will be used in a race car, if it was a street or even a street/track car I would go with the laptop programmable 6AL for convenience and the tinkering value... I also just ordered a new set of Magnecore wires as I was told it may cook Beru's or similar wire sets.

The MSD "High Vibration" coil is different than the "Blaster" coil. Since most 911 coil applications are mounted upside down the High Vibration coil is recommended instead of the normal, oil filled MSD Blaster. I don't think the 6AL is programmable. MSD's website is very informative. Good luck.

Is there any noticable improvment going from stock CDI to MSD.
My CDI just died and am about to pull the trigger on a used one ($125). Should I spend a bit more for the MDS? Chris 73 911 E |

I'm using an MSD 6AL with a Blaster SS coil. The setup produces amazing spark power.
![]() A couple of things I've learned: If you run without a RPM chip (pill) it just runs with no limit. If you have a rev limiting rotor, it will still do its job. (although the MSD limiter is much kinder to your engine) With the Blaster SS coil, you will melt stock rotors. The high vibration coils, or the Blaster 2 or 3 coils may be better about the rotor issue. Many MSD owners complain of the melted rotor problem. It's easy to install, works well, is very compatible, and is very affordable compared with a Bosch unit. I'd also recommend the new unit that has the adjustable (non chip) type rev limiter. I have also recently learned that someone makes a cable that allows you to mount your MSD 6AL(or N, or -2) and do a plug and play install as long as you have the correct coil and wires.. I guess you should have the proper rotor also....

Can you elaborate on the cable you mentioned Gary, perhaps a link? Does it have a male plug that mates with the 6 pin CD plug in the factory harness and a wire pigtail to splice the MSD wires to? That would make for a neater and more easily reversible installation.
What is the less melt prone replacement for the stock rotor in an MSD set up? To add a little more clarification to the MSD 'which part' discussion, this is from the Blaster coil installation instructions: "It is recommended to mount the PN 8202 and 8223 coils in an upright position.The High Vibration Coil, PN 8222, can be mounted in any position due to its epoxy potting compound." So several coils are called Blaster. The 6AL box and 8222 coil are the pieces recommended in the 101 Project book but sounds like other PN's will work. Jeff 83 SC |

On my Carrera I'm running a Mallory Hyfire VI A, got the blaster coil that comes with. No probs and super reliable. Better than the MSD named-brand as the Mallory box is Digital, not analog. They have the EZ kits for a decent price on EvilBay too. Click my name for a wiring diagram for Motronic cars.
