1969 2.0 with Zenith Carbs
Hi, I just picked up a motor with carburators and have been using all the post to decode the serial numbers. The serial number is 6195875 with 901/16 which according to the post it should be a 1969 2.0 T motor. However it has Zenith 40 TIN carburators that per the post should have been from a 71/72 model.

My '70T had TINS from the factory.. IMHO, don't waste your time with them.. They are junk..

Sashabigdeal,
First, WELCOME to the Forum ![]() You will find a lot of help here. The 901/16 is a 1969 911T USA. 6195875 is a correct engine number for a 901/16. The range of engine numbers for the 901/16 is 6195001 to 6197297. 6195875 is the 875th built out of 2297 total. The 901/16 originally came with Weber carburetors type 40IDTP3C & 40IDTP3C1. The 40TIN Solex/Zenith carburetors were originally delivered on the 1970 & 1971 911T (2.2) types 911/03/06 and the 1972 & 1973 911TV (2.4) types 911/57/67. I suspect the Zeniths were installed as a matter of convenience and the (more valuable) Webers went to another engine. The Zeniths (if not worn) will work just fine in this application but are not well regarded. Parts are very dificult to find. What is your use for the engine? The 2.0T is the least powerful 911 engine built and was initially built with low(er) cost a design goal. It has a cast steel, non-counterweight crankshaft, cast iron cylinders and more ‘cost reducing’ features. For modest use it can still be a very suitable engine. Keep in mind that it is now 41-years old. It no doubt has seen lots of service. Condition is everything. You might consider the possibility that this engine was built from a variety of parts just to make a ‘911 engine’. Know your seller and know the history of the engine. There are some vendors that build engines out of questionable parts. Inspect carefully. You and the seller might agree to have a ‘pro’ disassemble the engine for inspection and measurement as part of the purchase. This would protect you from buying a collection of worn-out junk parts and give the seller possibly something more valuable than a ‘core’ to sell. You and the seller agree on a price and an ‘adjustment’ (up or down) depending on condition. Best, Grady

My recollection is that Porsche went to Webers to SAVE money. Back in the day, Zeniths were more desirable. They have fuel accelerator pumps and don't have the flat spot at transition.
Parts are around....I agree the 2.0T is a bit of a dog, they even de-tuned it and put it in the 914/6. But it's still a good platform if you want to go thru the bottom end and do the deed.

Before you toss your Zeniths, do a search. Lot's of folks, myself included, have used them with very good results. Parts are a bit difficult to find, but they are out there. The carb set up, for a 2.0T engine should be pretty much the same for a 2.2T engine, if still stock......so you might be in good shape regarding carb configuration.
I would buy rebuild kits for the Zeniths, verify the jet sizes, etc and....... drive on. Like all carbs, once you get them dialed in, they are sweet. Regards, Al

You have some great advice from Grady; everything he has to say is GOLD.
The Zenith is not well regarded, but set up right they are as good as the Weber. What is the third # stamped next to the type # on the engine? What will you use the motor for?
