You can have this for $10K

I think for $10K and some work (and patience), you should be able to find something pretty good.

Bill,
Are you serious?? 10K??

Isn't that the image of our SCWDP Nordic Region Rep's car??
That venerable SC has a CIS so well sorted it should be in the Bosch Hall of Fame .

I say, not a penny less than $15,999.99

Having just spent longer than I'd care to admit looking for a 911, I think it will be a great challenge to find a decent car for $10K. If you do find a $10K SC, it will most likely need some work. And that's fine if you're mechanically inclined. If you're mechanically declined (opposite of inclined ) and you buy a project car then it won't be long until you'll have $14-16K in your car anyway. The little stuff really adds up fast at Porsche labor rates.

And, there's nothing wrong with that since you can easily spend $15-$18K on what you think is a great car only to find a lot of broken stuff. At least if you fix the stuff, you know what's been done.

If you're serious about buying a 911, find a good mechanic BEFORE you find a car. Find out what they charge for a pre-purchase inspection and be prepared to spend that amount several times over. The $60 to $250 you may spend on a PPI is money that is very well spent.

And if anyone actually knows where there's a nice stash of $10K SCs, let me know so I can have them shipped to Phoenix and sell them for a profit!

Well, there isn't a gaggle of them, but they're out there, imo. The week after I shelled out $13k for mine, I ran into a guy with an '82 targa with 54k miles who'd paid $12k for his. He found a Porsche on eBay that was owned locally, called the guy and said if he canceled the auction he'd buy the car for it's current high bid. Not wanting another 5 days of dumbass questions via e-mail (some sellers get stuff like "I don't like rear-engined cars; how much trouble to put that baby upfront?"), the guy sold it to him.

Lots of sellers get harried, tired of the hassle, or just plain don't want to sell the car to a moron. They'd rather get ten grand and know it's going to another enthusiast than get twelve and see it next week with a neon wiper lights and a 2-stage Honda tail.

With today’s used car market I think it's possible to find a used SC cheaper then in the immediate past. I found mine in Aug 2000 for $8700. It had a few niggling problems, missing fuel flap cable, cracked dash and broken center vent... But it did come w/ H4's, 16" Fuchs w/ new SP8000's, leather seats, Carrera chain tensioners, pop off valve, sunroof, turbo tie rods, new clutch, no rust anywhere (I’ve had everything off the car for a bare metal respray which happened today!) 110000 on the engine w/ a valve adj at 80000 mi. That euro engine seems really peppy. I don't know much about other car markets in the US but around NC they don't seem too pricey. Anyways they're out there!

I'd be more than happy to get $10k for my car. I paid $12K for it in 1991.

My car is kind of like an old hooker. She doesn't look too bad from the right angle, in low light, at a distance, with her bra on.

Runs good though.

Hey Bill, and everyone. I've decided that since I plan on keeping whatever I get for quite a number of years I will spend at least average if not above average. Oh and about you car being a hooker... mine is the same way Thanks for the input everyone... I'll be on the lookout for that perfect SC

I bought my 83 911 SC for 11,400 and it is in really good shape. I took it to my mechanic and this car had the tensionor updates, AC updates, new clutch, brakes and was in overall good condition. The car is tight and handles great. Just a little info, hope it helps.

yea fastmike, that does help... I guess if I search for a long time I can get a nice one for low teens... One question- what years had the whale tail/spoiler as an option (is the whale tail the only spoiler or are there different ones?) thanks

I don't think any of the SC's came out of the factory with tails. I just purchased a genuine porsche carrera tail for 960.00. You can get tail starting around 450.00. I must have the tail for looks on my car. These guys on this site can tell you anything you would ever want to know about these cars. Just ask. This is my first Porsche and I love it but I have a very limited knowledge of the car. I have only had it for 3 months.

Get the Gixxer 600. I am a expert in WERA and race a Ducati 996. I had a 2001 Suzuki GSX-R1000. That was a beast. I could spin the tire coming out of a corner and it would stand up on the rear tire by rolling the gas on hard. What a rush. I am kinda bored with the motorcycles so my new toy is my 911.

1980 'The Weissach Edition 911SC was offered in America as a limited edition model, with the tail as part of the package.

Otherwise, you could get your SC tail as a factoy option.

thanks island- are they more common with w/out the tail- seems the targa w/out tail is most common- anyone have production #'s

and fastmike- gixxer all the way! have you seen/heard of www.gixxer.com It's a bbs like this only for gixxers. It has a younger crowd than here which is good and bad but regardless it has alot of good info (all the gixxer stuff I know I got from there) I eventually will have the 951, SC and gixxer- not sure what I want first, but most likely the SC and the other 2 in the years to follow. I know least about the SC and by spring when It comes time to make a decision I want to be as much of an expert as I can be w/out owning one.
Ride Safe (but hard)

Get out Leland! What the heck else are you hiding on base??

My GSX was the "return to the long stroke motor" model in blue and white with soloseat. Couldn't believe the glovelike fit and the amazing speed and flickability of the bike. Sold it to try to find a CB-1 or a GB-500TouristTrophy. The bike was too fast for me!

Jdub,
actually I was very misleading.
I sold it to my roommate last spring. I still ride it all the time and forget that it actually doesn't belong to me anymore. I only sold it to help finance my engine rebuild.
He only wanted it because it matches the paint on his Mustang.
Now he is tired of it...wants a newer one...
I'm waiting until he finds another bike and then figure I'll buy it back from him for much less than I sold it to him for!

That thing is a beast... runs a little rich...when I roll off the throttle at 10K, it lets about a foot and a half of blue flame out of the pipe... I love it...

...it is the loudest object I've ever sat on...

Oh yes... I'll own it again.
Newer isn't always better.
