I just bought a carrera tail today on ebay. It will be here by the end of the week. Its winter here in New England, so I am going to go to work on it right away(bored). My car will be done at the body shop this week (new paint)and I am going to bring this down for paint as soon as I get it. Having said all that I want to install it myself(body shop will paint it). Can you guys tell me how to install it. I believe this part comes tail only. I know I need to drill holes, but I have no idea on how to lay it out. Also what else will I need. THANKS FOR YOUR HELP!

A clean carrera tail for $350?
Even w/o the mounting hardware and gasket that is a good deal! You lucky bastard! Like I said, just make sure it's insured and well packed. I had a guy who was cleaning out his garage a year and a half ago and he was selling his Carrera tail (brand new) for $500. And he even threw in the "little rubber thing that goes up front" (chin spoiler) for free! I thought this was the deal of the century until he called me and said UPS returned the box because they dropped it ...badly... it broke the fiberglass in several places. Lesson learned... good luck! btw, I emailed the seller asking if it came with hardware/gasket/screen... is it?

On your existing lid you will remove the grill. The tail base will fasten along the front edge using 5 original holes. The rear of the base is held down with 5 new holes that must be drilled. On the underside of the 5 new bolts is a piece of metal backing that serves to stiffen the lid along the rear mounting area. Along with the gasket/beading, you will also need some screen mesh to go on the inside of the baffles in the new base.
Image shows the rear plate on the underside of the lid. Good luck

Since you are taking the tail (base) to get painted, you may want to wait and try to find a good used Carrera deck lid that came with the factory tail. You should be able to pick one up for under $200. That way, you could have it painted along with your tail base (unless you get REALLY lucky, and it's the same shade and condition as your existing color), it would be far easier to mount, with no drilling, and you could return the car to stock if you ever needed to. Oh, and just an FYI, you got a steal of a deal! I sold a Carrera tail last year for $750. That did include the deck lid, but still!

I bought my used carrerra tail from another Pelicanite a few months ago and also a fantastic used deck lid from another for an embarassingly low price. I've since bought the gasket and reinforcement brackets (2) from Hendrick Porsche. Total investment is less than $475.
The tail had some minor cracks under the two front corners, so I've done some glass repair work on it, as well as removed and glassed the wiper motor shaft hole. I've drilled the holes in the lid for the tail already. I've got the tail and deck ready for paint - just waiting for my schedule to allow some shopping around for estimates as well as the $$ to show up.

Its all in the quality of the tail. The OEM is going to cost more but, they look like they should cost more. They fit well and the grill is quality Porsche. Some of the aftermarket tails with painted rubber to look like rubber and the attention to detail is missing.

I asked the seller, its an aftermarket fiberglass tail, with porsche rubber. Never installed. Now I need to find the gasket and brackets.
