Brake pads for 85 Carrera

What are good brake pads for a street 85 carrera? Is this a job a newbie can do? What is the torque spec for the lug nuts, if there is one?

I used the Textar Brand and I find them to be great on my 87 Carrera.
Pretty simple task for a newbie. Buy a Bentley manual and it's a breeze.

Lug nut torque is 96 ft/lbs

+1 Textars, be aware, the sensor is glue in type not the u shaped type in front. Besides that it was perfect

Pelican Technical Article: 911 Brake Pad Replacement

There is a section of Tech articles that give you a ton of information on DIY projects. Here is the one for brake pads. If you haven't flushed the fluid or don't know when it was last done, make that a part of the process. There is info on that as well. Get a good basic fluid like ATE blue or gold and fully flush it every two years.

You may want to take a good look at your flex lines and see if they need to be replaced while you're there...

I don't like the OEM Textars and/or Jurids as they ( by Euro law, I think) need to give off a certain amount of carbon dust. Awful.

I've tried a number of pads on my 85 over the years.....I like the Axxis ( formerly Repco) Deluxe as a non-aggressive-to-rotors...non dusting pad, if the use is street use like OEM. A bit more aggressive is the Axxis Metalmasters...also good. In the end...as I wanted a dual-purpose street/mild track pad.... I went with Pagid Orange.

A lot of these pads may or may not have the little "cut-out" on the backing plate.... to insert the wire that acts as a low brake pad wear indicator. I just zip-tied them off to the side. If these ever "activate" it means you wore through the wire anyway and they need to replaced. Better to simply keep an eye on the wear every so often.

Hopefully, the brake pistons are still reasonably aligned.

I like PBR/Centric ULT ceramic pads. They throw out a lot of dust, but they bite well, which is what you want. It seems as if all these pads are made by the same company now anyway.

Wil~

I've used the Pagid Orange for 3 years as such, but was told they were really a "track only" pad... I've been extremely happy with their track performance. they seem to last a bit longer than the more aggressive blue and black., and definitely more rotor friendly. On the street though, on the first few stops, the ability to stop is significantly different than when warmed up. Nothing dangerous IMHO, but definitely different. A terrific high performance pad for the street, once you have heated them up a bit! If you remove the dust shield, maybe add some 993 air deflectors (sold here on the site) change the fluid to Motul, your brakes will NEVER fade again!

I just tried a set of Pagid Blue, and while the initial bite is far more aggressive, I had great difficulty attempting to modulate pedal pressure to avoid locking up the tires. I ended up finishing off a set of BFG R1's prematurely, MY FAULT!, and also a set of Nitto NT01's, again my fault! I just returned to the Orange, and all is good again!

I found no issues at all with using Pagid Orange on the street ( yeah, a "bit" of a wooden feel when cold)......however... *do* follow the bedding-in procedure with the instructions ( or *equivalent*.....you can't haul a car down from 90-110 mph on the street. Maybe "ride the brakes" for a bit instead !!).

My point was to focus on the Axxis pads vs Textars for normal use......

The dust means they are working. To much work to wipe off the Fuchs after a spirited drive?

I do it, even with my less than concours condition car.

(I have Porterfield R4S, before that was ATE and Textar I think- OEM S/M setup).

No Flieger.....there are pads that don't dust as much as others.....and it may not have any relation to effectiveness....

.....and the "dust" can be hot particles that embed themselves as little black dots into the aluminum *forever*....so you can stop with the "rolly eyes"...as I think that is undeserved.

I give impressions to the OP.... on good street pads (that was asked-for).....and the recommendations I give have a side benefit of not looking like a charcoal mess as *most* German cars do with OEM pads ! What's the problem with offering an improvement? Oh yeah...probably a bit less spendy too.

This might be of interest to some....the SAE J866A test Codes or "Chase" codes gives you *some* rough idea of pad performance. For example, the last time I looked, Repco/Axxis Delux pads were ""FF" and the Metalmasters were "EE"....the first letter is (IIRC) the cold temp coefficient rating and the second letter is the hot rating. The higher the letters, the higher the coefficient of friction. But it isn't so cut-n-dry. These are usualy stenciled somewhere on a fresh pad.

Here's more---> DOT Pad Codes

They do make some dust.

+1 for Metalmasters. I've been using them for years and like them much better than any of the OEM pads. Very little dust and they last a long time.

Wil and porschenut,

What do you guys use for the rear pads? Our host shows that Metalmasters are NLA.

I had the Mintex and definitely less dust and quiet compared to the crazy dust & a bit noisy Textars.

I had some fade issues at the A/X so I needed to swap. Pelicans actually took the Mintex back so I could swap with the Textars
