Why would you say that? They don't. There are a lot of myths about how bad body flex is that are seriously exaggerated, and that they ALL leak and are ALL insanely noisy on the freeway because of wind noise.

They aren't. They are great cars.

Cayman S vs. 911.

I went retro in the fall and got my first 911 ('84 Targa), but still have the Cayman which I'll keep until spring when someone might actually be interested in it.

The Cayman is an amazingly fast car - the high end is incredible and the thing drives like it's on rails. Here's the downside. Try to find the engine. Unless you happen to have a lift in your garage, forget it. The thing doesn't even have a dip stick - you have to rely on a computer to tell you what your oil level is. Stack your Cayman owner's manuals etc. next to your 911 manual and prepare to be bewildered. My Cayman has the PCM, Nav, phone module, handset and multifunction steering wheel (bought it off the lot) - you need a 13 year old kid to explain it all to you and chances are you'll never use 75% of what's there. Again, they're great cars, but something gets lost in all that techno-glitz.

In the meantime, I'm enjoying the heck out of puttering along (comparatively) in a vintage 911 and actually being able to fix things when they go wrong.

Well, it depends on how much you lower one. A little bit is okay. Lower it too far and you run into problems. Just because people do it doesn't mean they are doing it correctly.

I've never driven a Cayman S but a Boxster S is a hell of a car. I've been thinnking about turning a couple of my older cars into one newer Porsche.

Scott, it wasn't a well thought out plan on trading but more a spur of the moment thing. Besides, the Targa was JoAnn's and she had a hard time with the clutch and NO A/C.

i got one word for you my friend. Depreciation. I haven't read all the posts, but i'm sure someone has mentioned the fact that in 10-20 years your SC will be worth the same or more as it is now. It will even account for inflation im sure. The Cayman on the other hand? hehe. I won't even go there. But on the other hand you will spend less on maintenance now. But maintenance is not always necessary. Car payments are ;-)



However, I'm in Dallas and i have to admit i'm a little jealous of your new A/C system. Not that we need it now in this 30 degree weather. ;-) arrrrgh

Enjoy the car. I really like caymans. I almost bought one too. From park place on lemmon. BUT i would NEVER trade in my Targa!!!!!!! nothing beats top off cruising in Fall/Spring weather in Texas. :-)

Just chiming in here to defend the Targa. It was always my dream car growing up and I finally lived out that dream a few years ago when I picked up my baby from the fire chief of the city of Frisco. Some would say that once you get your dream car, it no longer is your "dream car" and the reality sinks in.

I have to disagree! It's been two years now and I'm still in love, or obsessed as my wife says (way too often).

On the beautiful days, and we have a lot here in TX, I can take the top off and enjoy the sunshine. When it's not, the tops on and I have a blast. Sure the AC hardly works, but the good things far out weigh the negative.

I had the dream for most of my life. Now that it's in my life I'm even more fulfilled.

Targas are ugly to look at but real nice when you sit in them going down the road. I may have to cave in one day and go for one ... ;)

Ha targas are not ugly to look at my friend. Not sure what targas youve been looking but mine is far from ugly. Add a spoiler, a modern paint job, turbo fuchs, new interior and i have a beautiful targa. There are plenty of nice targas. The late 70s, early 80s color schemes dont help, but those same color schemes are on your beloved carrera as well

Interested in a $13k running 996? Now there's some depreciation, probably not too far off $1/mile.

99 Porsche 911

Great choice as you can see from my signature! You will love the Cayman - closer to a nimble, air-cooled 911 these days than a 997 (IMHO). There have been a couple of articles comparing them to 993s. Love the sound of the engine right behind your ears:) Now Gen 1's have some engine oiling issues that need to get resolved, so if I was doing it over again I would get a Gen 2 (although I bought mine CPOed and Gen 2s were out of my price range at the time). Buying used like you did definitely helps the depreciation hit.

Overall I can now enjoy the modern car feel of the CS during my commute and the wonderful character of my 87 on the weekends (and track) - the perfect match!

BTW a testament to the 87 - they both get about the same highway mpgs:)
