Went for a ride up to the mountains via the San Joaquin Valley during the recent heat wave. My oil temp gauge was approaching 250F. 1972T targa w/ MFI with stock oil cooler. What is the maximum oil temp this car should run with? Is there any danger of permanent damage running at this temp. and does the elevation change effect this oil temp reading and the ability of the cooler to cool the oil.

Bruce Anderson's guide, as I recall, was 230 is hot, 240 is damn hot and 250 is too damn hot. But he also said he wouldn't worry about seeing hot temperatures during unusual driving conditions, such as a long trip.
In other words, if your car is consistently running 240-250, you have some sort of problem. I think I would also use synthetic oil as it lubricates better at higher temperatures, but I think there are other issues using synthetic on vintage 911s, so you might consult the group on that. Hi Radicalfil, I quite often make the Shaver/Huntington Lake ride up out of the San Jouquine Valley floor, which is at sea level, to the Badger Pass summit appx 9000 ft., averaging 70 mphs for the long pull, and see engine temperatures peak at 240 degrees f. for my '67 911S, on 105 degree f. days.
