Question SC owners, Temperature question?

Fellow SC owners, at what mark does your oil temperature gauge read under normal driving conditions? I live where it is pretty hot in the summer, and mine runs about 9 o'clock. I just want to compare.

My 78SC, with the stock cooling system (i.e. trombone) generally runs at about the 8 o'clock mark. When its really hot, and sits in traffic, it will almost reach the 9 o'clock position.

Mine varies by season but for the most part in runs just below 9 o'clock. Last summer was very cool here and my first year of ownership. It will be interesting to see if it runs above 9 this summer.

Matt,
Here on the Left Coast of Canada, it's a lovely day. The temps are around 30C or almost 80F. I just got back from a 2 hour drive, and the guage was reading about 2 needle widths above the 8 o'clock after a spirited climb up the hill where I live. About 3 needle widths past 8 is as high as I've ever seen it. That was in a Seattle traffic jam on a day with similar ambient temps.
FWIW, I think I read somewhere a needle width equals around 8-10 degrees.

My SC has never got past the 9 oclock point. That's even after a hard run. I've got one of those "Carrera" type oil coolers.

Thanks alot doug! I went for a 30 minute drive here at 11 am and it was already 101 F. outside. So needless to say my car was at the 9 o'clock range within 15 minutes. I can't even drive it half the time, because I worry about cooking the motor. I'm cursed, because I can drive all winter long, but can't drive in the middle of Summer. just the reverse of the Poor guys where it snows.

My temps run in line with those above, commonly at 8:00, run hard or hot day goes to 9:00. I don't drive the car when the temp gets much past 90, there is no fun in it. Cooler is the multi-tube type, no fan. I've never been in a traffic jam, actually I've never sat through a light, so I don't know the heat soak limits of the system.

Sounds like you need to add the fan to your cooler, Matt. I should have mentioned I only have the stock (loop) cooler. If you are really worried about the heat, you should be paying attention to Jack Olsens oil cooler saga. Good luck keeping your SC cool!

All,

I instaled the newer style temp gauge that atually has temp markings on it.

On a hot day, (90-100F) it runs at 210 in traffic (or hard driving) still a bit hot for me.... So.....

I bought the whole kit, cooler, fan, scoop, and so forth to get the temps down.

I will let you all know how it works...

I will be instaling this with the auto switch as well as a manual switch (for hard driving and traffic) over ride. I will be taking pictures to send to Wayne to post as the ones that are there are not very good, and leave a lot to guessing.

I highly recommend the new gauge, it is worth the $65-80 to do this and takes less than an hour!

Randy

Randy,
did you get your K&N mixture gauge installed yet? I'm interested in installing one myself. How about the Carrera tensioners? And how come I can't get to your webpage?

I also have the numbered temp gauge on my 82, plus a front spoiler mounted Earl's oil cooler, and the temperature stays right below 180 degrees whenever the car is in motion except on the hottest days ~90 degrees, when it remains just above (but still touching) the 180 mark. In traffic sitting still, it will rise very slowly until I can get moving again. I am trying to find a very thin electric fan that I can get in behind the cooler for the times I am forced to remain that still. Except on the hottest days, I usually worry more about underheating of the engine, which I have been told can prevent the oil from reaching a sufficient temperature to "burn off" contaminants and condensation. I sometimes let it idle in the driveway until it gets slightly above the 180 degree mark on colder days, since my commute is only about a 15-minute drive on back roads that keep me moving and the engine cool.

On a warm day mine would run normally at just under the 9:00. On a hot day (all summer here) it would get up to 2 needle widths past the 9:00 position.

Used to really worry me. It will be interesting to see if there is any difference after the motor is back together.

I have been searching around for a oil cooler to replace the trombone in the fender.
I'd like to find a Lemke oil cooler or equivalent and run a set of soft lines back to my aux. thermostat if I can't find a replacement set of oil lines to replace my crushed hard lines. I figure I can find a place that will sell a lemke cooler and either make or sell a set of proper length lines to run from the thermostat to the cooler.

I have seen really old cars not originally equiped with an aux. cooler run a similar setup...with the soft lines exposed under the rocker.
never heard anything bad about this setup.
Anyone???

I have to get it up on blocks soon, the parts are piling up in the garage...

Cool

Randy,
When you get ready to do the Carrera chain tensioner install, and need some coaching or help, just let me know. My brother lives in Hayward (not far from you I believe) I could give you a hand.

Cool thanks Matt!

Will do, I have several other projects on the blocks first.

I may wait until I pull the motor for the paint to do that job....

Cool

I installed a new oil temp sender and numerical gauge this morning. and after my test drive in 101 F. sun, I'm happy to say that my car never even saw 210 F, even after hard driving. Where I thought it was over heating before. What a relief! So all you 911 owners out there with the old gauges, switch to the numerical ones, so you really know what your temp is.

Who's got the best price on the gauges. Is there a different one for a 84 811 than a SC?
thanks
