Please help - need to remove vent controls

Hi All,

I really need help.

I am in the middle of a project to replace the center dash trim and need to loosen and pull out the ventilation control panel in order to get the old trim piece off. There is a nut behind the ashtray that secures the vent unit to the firewall. It is a 10mm bolt which is screwed in on top of two fat rubber washers.

Now here is my problem. I have turned and turned this bolt (counter clockwise) and IT simply will not loosen off. I have tried to look in the trunk area but I can not see if there is a nut on the other side so I assumed that the firewall has an integral nut inside it that the bolt fastens in to.

The problem is, why on earth does this not want to slack off? I have turned it and turned it so there must be an issue with the thread?

If anyone has any ideas how to get this unit out a inch or so so I can remove the trim fascia it would be highly appreciated.

I hate this job. My memory is dim but on my 74 I think you need to turn a nut on a stud, not a bolt. IF that is your setup, you might see if there is any way to turn the nut and hold the stud. But if you can't reach it, or you really do have a bolt, you're going to have to cut the top off or something to loosen the control panel. You aren't going to be able to do anything without loosening it. In addition, you may need to loosen one or more of the clamps under the hood to let you pull the control panel a half inch away from the dash. Good luck, Jim

Hi Jim,

Thanks for the reply and advice. I have now moved on withe project, having resorting to cutting the top off the L bracket that holds the unit against the firewall with a Dremel tool. As my brother said, just get rid of the problem the sort out how to secure it once the job is done.

So I was able to move the contol unit at least an inch although it is a bit tight with the cables in place. The old panel is now off and the job now moves to the prep phase to clean all the old glue off and test fit the new dash trim panels.

It is amazing how something has trivial as a nut or bolt can derail a simple albeit time consuming job!

Cheers

I knew a Dremel was in your future somewhere!
