Windsheild Install long time reader first time questions

I've read though the past posts on installing the windshield and most focus on the trim. I've got that part tackled the seal and trim are on the window ready to go along with the cord in the inner flap.

The issue I'm having is when I put the glass back in the opening it sticks out a the top.

Do I need to seat the window completely in the frame before I start to pull the string?

I tryed forcing the top in and the bottom came out and I tried leaving the top sticking out but the bottom corners would fit into the frame.

I'm so close to having it back in I really don't want to call an installer.

You need to have one person on the outside keeping pressure applied whilst another on the inside pulls the cord to pull the lip inside the flange. You work all the way around together.

I understand the two person part but before you start with the pressure and pulling the cord should the window be fully seated in the opening or should the top be out and then "pressured" into place?

If I remember correctly (it's been a while....), the windshield should be properly 'seated' but not fully 'in'. I also remember there is an easier direction (ie. top first but I'm not sure - sorry). Also, as I recall gasket and trim must be fully on prior to the string process. Maybe someone who has done this recently can chime in.

Good Luck - you'll get it done!

So judging from the photos above, I'm not seated correctly? I started by placing the bottom of the window on the body should I install the top first?

I'm sure this is easy it must be user error.

Just done it and went smoothly.

Make sure you have the cord overlap 10 inches at the top. Start at the top (behind the mirror) and work you way along both the sides to finish at the bottom in the middle. Make sure somebody presses the window on the outside. The seal does not need to be fully seated, the idea is that with the cord you pull the seal over the window frame. Only when you completely done the window is full seated. (Carefully) bang on the outside with the palm of your hand to help the window seat. Make sure the window is right in the middle during whole of the process with even space left and right. The moment you pull the cord you feel the window/seal fall into place. Apply lots of dish was liquid.

Good luck!
Ed

PS: The front window is easy, a Targa window is the real challenge!

Paul, I'm not 100% sure on doing the top first. On my 87 I'm pretty sure that's the way we did it and had a bit** of a time keeping the trim in (as pictured above). It looks like your seated properly and the trim just worked it's way out. Besides putting pressure on that trim while someone is inside with the rope, I do not recall a better way. Don't worry, everyone that has done this the first time has some issues with this... Ask some of the guys who have installed the rear window in a targa.... ;-).
