SSIs and heat question

I'm installing my SSIs soon what will I need to do to run the flex tube between the exchangers and my rear blower? I read the tutorial and it explains using the existing elbows and needing to cut one shorter. I just tried a spare passenger side elbow on the SSI and the elbow has a larger ID than the SSI OD.

Second option is to backdate the heat and remove the rear blower get a pair of engine fan ducts. In that case what would I need to connect the heat exchangers to the fan ducts?

TIA - Terry

You can get a rear engine blower. It doesn't HAVE to be hooked into the fan but it helps. You'll likely need a splitter from the blower to provide air to the SSIs. OR a cross over tube that fits under the lip of the rear bumper.

THEN one hose off the blowegoes to the driver side SSI and to the cross over. The cross over charges the passenger side SSI.

Some people will add foot well blowers inside the cab under the dash. As to the different sized hoses, you can fabricate reducers out of thin sheet metal. OR pick an ID of SCAT SCEET aircraft tubing that fits.

You wont need the engine blower, the things (ssi's) make a ton of hot air. Just backdate the engine tin and the heat is on!

Joe Bob your suggestion is using the exiting plumbing correct?

James is it as easy as that, old tin from fan housing modified to sneak around the distributor and flex tube between there and the SSIs?

I like the idea of opening up the engine space, less weight, less maintenance more air.

I see some backdate ducts on the for sale section hope I can secure them.

Terry

Its just that easy. So you need the left and right tin. You can get that new or used or make the right side from a PVC 90˚ 2 1/2" elbow. The left side is a little tricky as the dissy in your car is bigger than the old ones so the sheet metal has to be massaged. Then connect hoses from the outlets to the inlet on the ssi's. The rear connects as the old ones did.

lower hose connection.

upper hose and hardware.
Oh, nice color car BTW!

I run my car regularly down to temps of 32 (0C) with only the drivers side connected and heat is never lacking. Of course I leave the targe top on when it's cold. Hooking the one side up is very easy.

I have considered backdating however I understand that it dumps a bunch of extra hot air under the motor when you least need it - all summer long. With a 3.2 it seems the heat could be a concern. I've also considered running the cross tube to get heat on both sides. Not because I need more heat but somehow it seems it would be good for the rocker area of the car to blow hot air through there.

I was thinking about adding the footwell blowers when I did my heat backdate and SSI upgrade but I don't need it. The SSI make TONS of heat as long as you are moving say 25mph or so. I've been driving my 80SC thru the winter here in Chicago and at 10deg it takes maybe 10min before I'm turning off the driver side heat because I'm broasting! My only gripe is when my wife and son are in the car the 3 of us can get the windshield a bit foggy when stopped in traffic.
SSI+heat backdate= toasty warm!

One of the 1st things I did was get SSI's and backdate the heat. Works great and simplifies your life.

Regards,
Al

.
turn on the "fresh" air blower and direct the heat/air to the windshield.

the red flex hose like in the picture above and the regular black hose on the right. no extra elbows and no need to backdate and remove the blower fan. if you backdate, the left duct needs to be modified to clear the SC distributor, or get one from a 930.
