Vertex Auto? G50 for $1,799.00

Looking a little forward and thinking about a transmission rebuild, I located Vertex Auto in Miami fl. They offer a rebuilt G50 transmission for 1,799. with the exchange of my core. They also stated the trans. comes with a 1 year unconditional warrany for that price. My question, is this a good price and has anyone on the forum delt with this company? One last benefit for myself is the company is only 40 min. from my work, so shipping will not be an issue.

I order stuff from them every now and then. Never a rebuilt item though, but service is quick and parts sent were as stated. They are a lot closer to me than Pelican, but most of my $ come here hehehe They have been around since before Pelican.

Delt with them a few times, but not any big purchase as a tranny, the owner seems to be very knowledgeable....his shop is close to the collection...

Go to Pelican's parts section for the late 3.2l Carrera and look up pricing for G50-01 service parts. Check the bearings, synchros, and sliders&hub assemblies. Add up what they would cost you to purchase. Once you do the math I think you'll come to your own conclusion on the caliber of rebuild you get for your $1800.

I installed a 901 that was purchased from them. I was in the process of installing it, and noticed that the diff was unable to make a full turn. They had left the center pin hanging out of the diff. was a quick fix, and the box did work flawlessly after that, did not leak, and he has ran it for 2-3 years now without issue. That is the only experience that I have had with their transmissions.

A long time ago before Pelican existed, i bought a rebuilt 911 from them, had a problem 1 year later, sent it back, they fixed it and sent it back to me for free. They stand behind their products and their warranty. That is all you can ask for.

As for what you get for $1800? probably set of synchros refresh. Remember, they do this for a living so they probably have a bunch of cores where they can cannablize used bearings for nothing. You probably can't expect to get new set of gears in the rebuild.

I sent Vertex a core tranny when I bought a rebuilt 915 from them. The owner (I think his name is Gilbert) said the ring and pinion that we sent were not reusable and refused to honor my core refund. We agreed to send him another r&p even though my mechanic and I believed the original set we sent was fine. We inspected the second r&p set carefully and I happened to watch as my mechanic packed the r&p in a box which I then took to fedex and shipped to him.I have the fedex receipt which shows the weight of the package and it corresponds to the weight of a ring plus a pinion. After a couple of weeks passed and no word fron vertex, we started calling him. After several days we finally got him on the phone and this time he claimed that our package was missing the pinion. In my conversation with him he stated that he was the person who received the package when it arrived and it was still sealed and not damaged and that he was the one that personally opened it. He has never honored my core refund. Since I am in Texas and he is Florida it is not economically feasable for me to chase after him. By the way , the "rebuilt" 915 failed within a few months. So good luck. I think my credit card company is going after him.

I've heard many horror stories on the rebuilt parts. Do a search and call a few mechanics.

I had a 915 'rebuild' from Vertex for my 86 ragtop carrera.
I cannot remember 100% but believe it was for replacement of syncros, which is what i needed.
They do reasonable work for the money.
I think my 915 rebuild cost about $1,500 and think this was back in 1999 or 2000
Tranny worked fine for the remainder of my ownership and so I would give them a thumbs up
hope this is of some help
regards
Ben

Thanks gents, this was a big help hearing both sides. I will pay a visit to the business before I dish out any cash, maybe that way I will get a feel of what kind of service they have.

Since you are local, there is less risk.

I elected to rebuild my own 915 a couple years ago as opposed to buying someone else's rebuild. You may choose to do the same.

Very interesting points guys. Our old track chair said about the same as you folks, in that for $1700 you will not get a full rebuild.

Before you make up your mind, why don't you give Gary Fairbanks a call? He comes highly recommended by my mechanic.

Last I had heard, Gary didn't do G50's. And it's not a DIY gearbox in my book either.

You might try contacting California Motorsports and see what they quote you for a rebuild.
