For future reference, I was bit twice by the lump of grounds connected at the drivers side intake. Corrosion and loose connections there cause similar symptoms....

Its Back F!@#$, It happened all day today we had some heavy rain,Stumped!
whats next?

I'm guessing it cause is electrical related.
Idea - go to Don's (Dons Autowerks) and see what Worth has to say. They might be able to diagnose by swapping components and also checking what you did so far.

I am thinking I might be looking for a bad ground as well...Any Ideas

Take a look at those sensors if you haven't already. Refer back to post #33. I'm pretty sure there exposed to the elements.

And once you get this fixed, will have to get together for a back country drive. There is a group of us that have done some semi-organized drives. I have been on one so far. Good times.

I think you can get at the two sensors back there without dropping the motor. Fishing the wires where they need to go, not sure. At some point if it is running good after the rain stops, you could try spraying water back there and see if the problem comes back.

I called Tom, the Mechanic up and had a short chat with him,Nice guy,he has fare rates, hopefully we could do some business soon, maybe if this problem completely fails for the love of God...

warner53 03-25-2011 06:47 PM

I am with you, my 86 has recently started with the same symptoms. Changed the cap, rotor, thinking about the wires. Gonna go look up the sensors and see where they are.

Hang in there.

Check the insulation on the sensor cables real good.

When I had my sensor problem, my local Porsche mechanic didn't have to drop the engine to get there. Some jack stands would get you there, but a lift would be best.

Yes, Tom is a pretty nice guy and I like the Mobil service he provides. I found a pretty good mechanic less then a mile from where I life. He solved my sensor problem and didn't gouge me. The car was gone for too long, but I was happy with everything else.

Hey hcoles, good idea about spraying water up in there.

warner53 03-26-2011 08:23 AM

Bump

hcoles 03-26-2011 09:14 AM

you could go around and check the ground locations, I think the Bentley book points them out, something like 7-9 major ground locations. Clean, put on some grease and torque back down.

Check the O2 sensor, I changed mine last year and didn't fully seat the connector. It would idle fine and drive at low speed but when trying to accelerate it would cough and spit. Could be your sensor is toast or just a loose connection.

+1 on this. Always good to check all of the sensors since they are what sends data back to the DME to know how to adjust for fuel, air, timing, etc.
