Spanner Wrench
I just bought a "new" 1985 911. I need to change the alternator, but I quickly discovered the tool kit is missing. What is the best substitute for the spanner wrench that one uses to get the belt off? Is there a good place to buy that tool by itself? There is a spanner wrench set on the PP site, but it's four wrenches, and besides it doesn't look like the one I've seen in pictures from the tool kit.
Thanks.... |

Welcome to the board, unfortunately your need that wrench to do it properly.
In a pinch, I guess you can use a channel lock but that will tear up the fitting, If you don't care about concours. Jim

You can buy just the wrench from our host: Porsche 911 & Carrera Tools - Page 6 It's known as the alternator pulley wrench, part #PEL-TOL-P209

Welcome to our BBS. You will find lots of great advice here.
Besides the Fan Pulley tool, the only other tool you really need from the Factory tool kit is the Spark plug wrench and related allen key. It is designed precisely to work in P-cars like no other. You can find them here in the used part of the forum or on e-bay. They come up on occasion. You can see one in the upper left hand side of this picture: ![]()

If yours has a Allen wrench fitting on the end of the shaft like in the picture, you can use a socket allen to remove the nut for the adjust/replace. I know cuz that is what I did until I got the right tool.

Hi Harry:
No intent to hijack the thread, but where can you find those spark plug sockets with the spring on them? I don't have the original tool kit for my '87 either, and I've yet to come up with an easy way to get the spark plugs out. Those sockets look like they'd work, but our host doesn't seem to carry them.

Hi Mike:
For the Factory spark plug sockets, you will need to watch the classifieds here (and other p-car enthusiast sites) and e-bay to find them. As I noted, they come up every once in a while.

Thanks, guys. Looks like you can pick up a new one for the princely sum of $78.15!
