What is a good weatherstrip preservative?

I may have to park outdoors and I'm concerned about the effects of UV and weather on the rubber windshield seal as well as other glass seals or weatherstrip. What is the best product to use?
Some of the Corvette bbs threads mention Krytox grease, but $34 for a two once tube seems a little steep. Any suggestions? Please not Armoral!

Wurth Rubber care and/or 303. Or you can use straight glycerin.

uhmm you asking how to keep you rubber's wet? ROTFLMAO

all joking aside, a car cover would limit exposure to both interior and exterior parts and finish

I have used the Gummi-Pflege, purchased here at PP for rubber seals and weather stripping with good results.

So - reviving an old thread -

I was looking at my weatherstripping and it is in great shape - and was about to use krytox on it to keep it looking great - because that is what was recommended for all the top seals on the caddy (removable hardtop and convertible) and it has been working well, but has anyone used it on their Porsche?

I would imagine weatherstripping is weatherstripping.

Agree. I use plain old silicone spray to keep door seals fresh.

geez, Krytox is not something to play around with.

Gummi and Wurth rubber care both work very well. Something called LVR from the Wax Shoppe is good. Meguire's has a new spray product that looks good too for the rubber exterior trim.

I too have used the Gummi-Pflege, purchased here at PP for rubber seals and weather stripping. I had very good restorative results.

I don't know about long term protective properties as it hasn't been long since the treatment, the car is garaged, and the weather here is fantastic!

Groit's Garage Vinyl & Rubber Dressing: Special UV blocking agents protect surfaces from cracking, fading and hardening. Keeps my rubber soft, supple and looking great. Works great on the dash board too. My tires have a satin, non-greasy finish and never looked better. 800.345.5789 Item#11173

Any commercially available rubber dressing should be fine, but I like 303 Aerospace Protectant because it's cheap, it's available at most LAPS, and all the pro detailers recommend it. I've used most of the popular types and this is my favorite. It's also fantastic as a tire dressing and interior detailer for all plastic, vinyl and rubber. It blocks UV so it's perfect for a car that sits outside a lot.

Thanks everyone - it sounds like there are lots of options...Gummi-Pflege sounds like a popular choice.

I don't quite understand why krytox is a 'scary' thing though - many people with removable hardtops swear by it - it is all over the Corvette, Mercedes, t-bird, and Jeep forums as a pretty good solution to stop the irritating squeeks, and to protect all that weatherstripping. I have liked it on the Caddy.

Fox, I was gonna pack my cv joints with it, but the safety warnings say to use a respirator and gloves, and you need some sort of special solvent to clean it up, unless I am mistaking it for something else (btw was responding to the post previous to yours)

Edit: just thought of Tri-flow synthetic grease. That stuff is friendly to plastic and rubber, and contains teflon.

I used to use Krytox quite a bit for lubricating gadgets I built to fly inside the space shuttle in the cabin and spacelab. The solvent is trichlorotrifluroetheylene. I don't think you need to mess with this stuff just for your car it's an unnecessary expensive product ie overkill. I use Mother's back to black it seems to work as well as any of the silicone based products.

Trichlorothene is "bad" stuff ... We don't even use it in the aviation industry anymore. It was somewhat replaced with MEK which is methyl ethyl ketone... also bad s**t !
Stick with safe,proven products ...

Cheers !
