What I think "SC" stands for.
Reading thru Paul Frere's book, Porsche 911 Story, I. Think I've figured out what "SC" stands for. The most common thing I hear is "super carrera". This would seem highly unlikely as the new SC was detuned to 180 bhp from the 3.0 Carrera's 200. (Presumably to not compete with the 928 the author points out.) The SC replaced both the 2.7 and the Carrera 3.0, therefore I think "SC" combines the two and would be better written as a 911s-c.
On a side note, the book says that when the 1980 sc was introduced at 188 bhp as compared to the original sc's 180, that there was little reason for the increase other than it was known that the 78-79 motors put out more than 180 bph, that is, probably 188. |

This is directly from the Porsche website:
The letters SC stood for Super Carrera but also recalled the type 356 which had the same suffix. And the reason for the drop in HP: The bonnet hid a three-litre engine which, at 180 HP, was 20 HP less than the Carrera, but mainly due to detoxification measures in the form of secondary air injection, which was also augmented for US market exemplars with a catalytic converter.

Not again......
In Porsche nomenclature, "S" always stood for "Super" and "C" for "Carrera" unless the initials were "CS" which is "Club Sport". The 911 RS is a "Type 911 SC" and that "SC" clearly stands for "Super Carrera". Also, you need to stop thinking that the US market is all that exists. The Euro 911 SC had the same HP as the Carrera 3.0 which was not sold in the US market. Scott |

Maybe "slower carrera" would be more appropriate, then?!

The '81 through '83 ROW SC's had 204 HP versus 200 HP for the Carrera 3.0. The '78 and '79 ROW SC's had 180 HP and the '80 ROW SC had 188 HP. I am getting old..... Scott |
