Pertronix Install?!
I'm helping my dad get his "new" 1976 911s Targa in good working order and wanted to update it to the electric ignition.
So I got the Pertronix Ignitor and FlameThrower, but I'm having a little trouble installing them... 1 - The old coil's terminals are marked "A" and "B"... any idea which is + or -? I tried a test light with the ignition on with no result... should that have worked? 2 - The old point distributor has one wire and the new one has two... where do they go? 3 - The old distributor's rubber seal is clamped in place by a little plate and the bolt holding this plate on is nearly impossible to get to... I tried several things, but nothing is working... anyone know a trick to getting this off without pulling out the distributor? I'm not at all familiar with these, so any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks! |

We're going to need a picture of the rubber seal that's stuck on.
EDIT: I didn't look closely at the car you have. On a '76 you will have some kind of capacitive discharge ignition. The right way is to connect the black wire wherever the green wire from the points was attached, and connect the red to a place with switched 12v +. I think I used the fuel pump signal relay to get mine, however there should be switched 12v into your CD box also. The below info is for a pre-CD car. Sorry for the confusion! Good luck! As for the rest... The Pertronix is actually a very easy install. -Look at where your green wire from the points goes.... the Black wire will connect to the same place. (the - side of the coil) -The red wire attaches to the + side of the coil. That is a new connection, as points did not require power. There should be another red wire already connected there that should have 12v DC ONLY when the key is on. Summary: white wire replaces green on the neg terminal, red wire goes to the other side on pos and also has a swithched 12v connection. When you're finished: 2 red wires on +, 1 white wire on - If you have a condenser in the system, remove it. The Pertronix is a great upgrade! -Dan

Can't help with the specifics, but do not leave the ignition on for more than 15 seconds (to be safe, it might go 30 or longer) or you may never get it to fire. Pertronix will burn out if left on but the motor not running. Ask me how I know.

Believe it or not the only time I broke down in my '73 Land Rover was a bad Pertronix ignition.! So much for Lucas the prince of darkness..
Luckily I had a set of points in the cubby box to replace it! I'd prob go MSD or Mallory; but just my opinion.
