*&@#^( shift knob
just venting about the ridiculous SC shifter design. My 82's knob and boot were worn. Trying to remove old knob, twisted really hard and instead of knob twisting, the two parts of the shifter (expoxyed together in a really poor design) separate so the whole shifter is twisting. Eventually got the knob off. Had to take shifter apart to JB Weld the 2 shifter parts together. Until then, to get in/out of fifth gear I had to reach down and hold the whole shift lever in my hand to keep it from twisting.
Found excellent condition OEM knob on ebay still attached to a shift lever, bought it for $75. My car has factory short shift so can't use this lever (if I could I would never have tried to remove knob). So I buy vise and put lever in it and try all the tricks for removing knob (pulling like hell, heat gun, 15mm wrench and hammer). I pull so hard I literally ripped the knob in two, like the damn Incredible Hulk or something. The tension ring and bottom part of knob are still attached to shifter. Apparenlty someone used JB Weld or something to hold the ring on. Knob totally ruined. To make matters worse, got to 2 auto parts stores to find a generic knob and their knob selection is limited to 8 balls, skulls, and demons. ^*&*&@#!!! The whole crush ring design is ridiculous, BMW, Honda, Toyota etc. have threaded levers with knobs that that just twist off and you can often used knobs from different makes.

The crush ring has been around for years. It's the morons that glue the knob on that screws it up. Dumb Ass Previous Owners aka DAPO.

Use a Momo knob. It has three set screws. no more crush rings.

Understood about idiotic previous owners' actions...but ya gotta say.... someone at Porsche was smoking crack to come up with the idiotic crush-ring design. A simple threaded-rod design would have done it. What?..too expensive...... ??? !!!???

the crush sleeve alone, with no epoxy, can be impossible to release w/out knob breakage.

Oh...I get it.....idiotic design is no longer idiotic of there are examples of even more idiotic designs around...is that the point ? BTW...I wouldn't look down on a McLaren F1.

McLaren considered a Honda, then an Isuzu and settled on a BMW motor.....so not a true "English". I based my opinion on Healy's and Morris rides that I had and continually wrenched on back in the early 70s. They just didn't make sense after working on American and German. I have no opinion on French rides....never worked on them and only see them on the side of the road with white surrender flags.....

Unless someone can produce a procedure that actually works to remove the knob, I would have to concure that it is a very poor design. That is if Porsche ever intended it to be removed.
I just installed a factory short throw shift kit and couldn't get the knob off either. Any ideas on replacement knobs? Thanks |

I have a 76 Targa 3.0 with a black interior. So far I like the Momo Anatomico Tall shift knob. I need to pick one soon as it is less fun driving without one.

I've never had a problem. Crescent wrench under the knob set loose against the shaft, sharp upward whack with a mallet.

I think a 8 Ball shift knob would look pretty funny in a 911. Then add a suicide knob to the steering wheel and take it to a local PCA car show! It might be fun to watch the judges.

I'm with you. The original plastic replacement is $105! So I'm looking around. I found a blk ball wiht the SoCal Speed Shop logo that is different. With a different motor and a color change, I'm not too worried about judges! Where did you find the Rat Fink knob!? By most definitions, my targa is a hot rod. I'm still undecided though. Bob |

I just converted to a factory short shift kit and cracked the old knob removing. I ordered a new P knob and crush ring. Now I am scared to put new knob on. How do I install w/o damaging. I tried to push on and it wouldn't go easily. Suggestions??

There is a guy on evilBay selling billet versions of the stock knob in polished, machined or black anodized finishes for around $65. I bought one and the quality is top notch. I'll try to find the link when I'm not on my phone and post it.
