another gas smell question
I have searched the gas smell issue and noticed that most say replace the lines and the filler cap gasket and some even the sending unit gasket but i haven't heard anyone with this issue yet. so i get the gas smell in the trunk and abit inside the car at start up. after about half a minute its gone and will be gone for the remainder of the day even after work (9 hrs). i have replaced the gas cap gasket which seemed to work abit. am wondering if its the sending unit gasket or the lines in the trunk or the carcoal canister. if the canister, who sells replacements or is it i have to plurge it with something?

Canister? it is in the passenger rear wheel well. check to insure all hose are connected there and not damaged.
I would raise the car and check the fuel pump hose, it is a 3/8" x 6" hose and will breakdown over time, a common fix. Mine was actually cracked, a simple fix but you need to do it quickly since gas will spill out, it is not the one under pressure.

I'd remove the fuel pump cover and have a look at all of those hoses...mine was a pressure line, just before going inot the tunnel.

That is the evaporator tank which is plumbed to the tank, fuel filler neck, and (eventually) the charcoal canister.

Don't overfill the gas tank. Trying to get that last ounce of gas into it. Just my .02 worth.

charcoal canisters in the early cars was a VW part - easy to find at a junkyard; unsure re the later cars, but any canister should work fine

It's more likely to be a rotted out braided hose.

I get a faint fuel smell when I leave the windows closed overnight. I have the odometer out for repair and the smell is more noticeable in the morning which makes me think it's something in the trunk area but I can't seem to find anything obvious. I've touched and smelled all the hoses I can access and none seem to have any fuel on them. 88 Coupe BTW.

flex them and look closely
then look up under the cowl for the carefully hidden tank that cracks... |

+1 check under the car at the Fuel Pump, flex, it will be a sweat spot or stain, if you actually saw a leak that would be very dangerous for a potential ignition.

Couldn't a person just glue a small crack in an expansion tank?

I don't know. I think JB Weld might hold to gas fumes. It's the expansion that might be a problem.
