If it was mine I'd rip it out and fully rebuild it.

Why? You'd have a tight and leak free engine that would last for decades.

Unless Im told absolutely do not open the bottom by the owner, I open the bottom to change the intermediates and reseal. That way I get to see the mains and then I can tell the owner what the last 20 or 30 years has been for the bottom and if there is a problem it can be handled at that point.
