G50 - Third Gear Repair
Time to expand my transmission repertoire from 915 to G50.
I am trying to fix my G50 third gear. Don't know what I will find, but so far I am here: ![]() I THINK the next step is (unlike a 915) to remove the screw retaining shift fork? Yes? ![]() Second issue, I believe this has the upgrade done, since I have bearings on the end? Should I still replace the shaft and bearings? Just the bearings?

It's the beginning of Thanks Giving week, so some folks might be doing stuff other than Pelican. I wish I could help you, but here's a free TTT!!

Yes, remove the shift fork bolt. Make sure that you keep the guide sleeve and selector sleeve together, maybe even mark them for installation.
You will need a really good puller set to take your trans apart, everything is done with pullers and you will need a set of different length arms that are very strong.

Eye candy
I dont' mean to drift off-subject... but, man, thank you..
Those are some purrrrrdee pictures! (good, closeup, detailed eye-candy) There should be thread just containing hi-Q mechanical photos?.. Really, to all of us.. isn't this art? I would be pleased to hang photos like this on my new apartment wall (after the divorce of course)! I'm sure most who walk these hallowed Pelican halls... could hold a piston or rod in hand and admire it for.. well, for longer than I care to admit. Our brains demand the stimulation and satisfaction of a well engineered "machined parts"... Questions like: "How in the world did they make ths?" or... I coudn't make this part in my entire life".. And the classic "If you wanted to have this made from scratch.. It would be in$ane!!! I just watched (by chance) an "Amazing Factories" episode (I believe that's the name). And it was 1hr on the production of Porsche 9xx series. It was the 1st one I've see where they actually gave us some cheese.. Good tight, detailed shots of the engines in various states of production. Highly automated..ah.. scary AuToMaTiOn.. But wonderful "insider - close" shots of engine producton. Close and personal shots of the case halfs in all their glory (more impressive than I had guessed). It's too often that these shows aim for the lowest common demonator.. aka the Peb Boy crowd - "This is a wheel, and it goes round and round" eGads man!. It was nice to see something that was close to real brain food. I have a new found respect for the Dr. P. Even though these motors are a far cry from the bathtubs and 912s., IT WAS PURE SEX (can I say that?:). The case halfs and heads etc might as well been have been mide from pure unbtaininum.. Begging to be sized down to fit on your ladies ring?... You were left with the feeling of Uber quality - But of course!.. :o) It's to easy to forget what lies beneith.. Covered up layers of.. what is that stuff anyways? A shame to bury them away "in the trunk".... Boot, decklid ;) But I digress... I would love to see QUALITY photos of these amazing parts. Where function meets form (but function wins out, of course). I might seriously think of actually putting "photos in my wallet"... or even a getting a quad cam tatoo? We live in a wonderful world.. My brain needs feeding.. With that said.. three scoops of flat 6 and a R&P on the side please.. And yes.. I will be taking that Johnson Rod home in a doggy bag... I apologize for this being a bit rant'ish.. I will try for someting more productive, next time :o> Randy Micro Image "We've upped our quality, now up yours.." Long Beach, Ca. You'll find that the puller you need is very large. Also need a large crows foot wrench or a big socket welded onto the end of a long section of pipe.

Well I am close.
I can see that my third gear synchro is worn out, it's just a matter of getting there. How do I remove the bearing above the nut?

This is definitely one I wouldn't recommend attempting without a manual. I would take Dan J up on his offer and send him some beer in return for the favour...
