1982 SC breather cover gasket

I'm trying to isolate an oil leak. I've got an original '82 SC and I've lowered the engine to get the oil cooler off. The fuel injection is still attached as I don't really want to take it off this time around. Is it possible to get the breather cover off while the fuel injection and air box is attached?

Also replace oil pressure switch (red) for warning light and t-stat o-ring while you are there they leak more than breather cover gasket. T-stat o-ring gets hard and brittle. Take your time the job is a pain but can be done. Good luck regards tom

Okay, I'm super close, the dang breather cover will almost come off, but not quite. This simple thing is going to be the death of me. The bottom of the air box assembly is in the way. It seems like I only need about 1/8 of an inch. Suggestions? Thanks. Shane

Pull off the CIS and clean up and inspect everything. Spend some bs hours and almost no money to make everything perfect

i used a light film of permatex black goo gasket maker on new breather gasket

Thanks. The CIS is off. It's pretty easy to get off...well it wasn't exactly easy the first time. If I did it again, it would be easy.

What are the torque specs for:

Breather cover
Oil temp sensor
Oil pressure sensor

Sorry to bring this old thread up again, but Bentley states 6.0 ft-lbs, What gives?

My newly installed gasket is leaking and I assume Bentley is incorrect. I don't think the torque spec is different from an '82 to '85, is it?

RONIN-SAN, S.O.S.......

A good torque for these non critical fasteners is, tight. If it still leaks it might be some old pieces of the gasket still in there. Make sure the flanges are clean and you can use a little sealant on the flanges. this is a place that you do not want to re visit. Do the thermostat O ring and the oil sender while in there. a couple pounds torque eather way won't make a difference.

I like James' attitude. Do what you have to just do a good job.

I use Permatex non-hardening gasket sealer when I think it's called for. It's the brown stuff that you wear for awhile unless you clean it off with some thinner. I usually don't like using the silicone gasket sealer

Besides the breather gasket i also used it on lower stack of carb intake gaskets with the exception of the top one at the carb to intake joint. Some of those intake gaskets purport to have sealer as part of their design. I still used the Permatex.

it's against the Porsche rule book so it's only what i do

Thank you Gentlemen!

I did a moronic thing and replaced the Unholy Trinity even though there was no leak, surmised after developing a leak after the swap.

I eliminated the dry ones, Thermostat, was dry all around, then the Idiot Switch (aka Jim Switch), couldn't tell if it was that or the Breather. Had both on stand by, so I replaced the Switch, dry, then I noticed the Breather, 1 of 3 nuts and side of seal was wet, DOH!

I torqued it to 6.0 ft/lbs (72 inch-lbs on my micro torque) per Bentley, USELESS! I called them and unlike Haynes they have ZERO Support for verification of torque specs. The Recep, bragged about how they took the car apart there, so BFD! if you can't get it right.

This not the first time I found discrepancies in the Bentley, many conflicting figures. Yes, I BIOTCHED to tell them for 4 times the price of Haynes they need to check their work.

So, I default to RONINLB's post 8.1 ft-lbs on Breather Gasket 10MM nuts. and some goo for extra measure, I do not want to go back to the Burmuda Triangle of Sludge. My wrench did the initial swap and found bunch of goo, he was horrifide but it looks like I have no choice.

Side note for those planning to enter the triangle, properly tighten the breather hose!

Back to squeezing my big Buddha head back in her Arse ( ;D )

Update: Oil Breather Gasket = 8.1 ft-lbs CONFIRMED No More Leaks.

Side note, the 10MM nuts are lock nuts and need to be on properly flat side down over washers.

Arigato again Ronin-San!!!

Thanks! This is timely as I was just about to re-install the engine with cover torqued to 6 ft-lb.

I will bump it to 8.2 before going back in.

Yeap, 6ft-lb is too little torque.

Make sure the breather hose is nice and tight too when you re-install engine.

Yep, I just torqued them to 100 in-lbs.... I got another half-turn on each one.

I would have been pi$$ed if I had re-installed the engine and had a leak back there.
The breather hose is nice and tight fer-sure!

Thanks for the tips!

Oh Snap,

I read his reply post on my cell and I freaked, then came home to re-read, thank heaven. 100 ft-lb would that even be possible?

LOL,

BTW: Day two of all day driving Freeways, Gasket Cap still nice and dry Now I need to wash the engine again.
