OT - Cadillac Rear Brakes

Trying to help Grandma out this weekend by changing pads/rotors on her 1992 Cadillac Seville SLS.

They were down to metal on metal...rotors trashed.

Changed the fronts no problem.

On the rears, I couldn't get the caliper pistons to push back!

Anyone know how to get them back? Is there some trick w/ the parking brake mechanism or something?

Otherwise I would assume they are siezed up and need to be replaced.

Tell the truth Nick, you got a new ride! I'm fairly certain there's a ratcheting mechanism that works with the parking brakes on that vintage GM rear calipers. I think you have to rotate the piston to get it to retract. Might even be a tool to help you do this. No specific experience myself, though. I'd head up to the local parts place and see if they've got a service manual you can look at or the tool.

don't force the piston, there is a trick. call the dealer service dept. and ask.

examine the caliper, for example, on a saab there is a retracting nut hidden under a cap on the rear of the caliper.

Thanks guys,

I am familiar w/ the Saab caliper (have owned 5 Saabs), but saw no such nut to turn the caliper back.

There was a little grooved design on the outside of the piston which could logically mate w/ some special tool to turn it in.


I know this is a Porsche forum, but its also the largest pool of automotive knowledge I know!!

If it's like the Audi rears the piston needs to be screwed back with a special tool. The face of the piston has assorted indentations(female)(there are at least 6 different patterns) which the tools' male pattern fits into. The tool is then rotated witha normal 3/8" ratchet. the tools are commonly availabe at any good auto supply house(NAPA for example).

If the piston face looks anything like those on my 92 Laser/Talon/Eclipse, you can rotate the piston back into the bore with a pair of needle-nose pliers. Insert the tips into the grooves and turn. Looks like this:



Brakes on the front of mom's Olds Aurora did the same thing (destroyed rotors). The outer pad had plenty of material remaining. Inner pad was down to the backing plate and munching on the rotor. Great caliper design. Apparently, they "float" like rocks.
