Fan crack, not the housing!

I was swapping the alt belt on my 88 Carrera and saw this:

The cracked area actually protrudes enough to contact the belt and abrade the edge of it.
Any ideas why this has happened?

Also, the replacement belt I had in my tool kit seems too long as I can not get sufficient tension to keep it from slipping even with no shims between the pulley halves. I even tried a new Gates 7280(i think) belt with the same results.

Hey bro , That looks spooky to me. Are you gonna keep driven it that way?
Have you got a spare?
I got a contact message a while ago from a guy in Waimanalo area, said that he has parts for sale.
His name is Dick Shift. At porsche@hawaii.rr.com I haven't dealt with him myself. But he is on your Island.
All the best
Richard

Rich, I'll continue to drive the car as is, but I'll monitor the crack to see if it grows.
I do know Jon, I might go and see him this weekend, but for parts for my RS replica. I doubt he has any Carrera parts available.

How is your project RS coming along, Haven't seen any updates in a while?
The Tsunami deal last week was sobering, hey?
Had a big burst of progress here this last Month as a p-car Mechanic friend was staying across the street for six weeks. It is great working on the car with some knowledgeable help at hand.
Cheers Richard

I haven't seen a fan fail like that before. I know you said you were going to keep an eye on it but I wouldn't run it the way it is.
If it starts to go it will go very suddenly. Try to imagine the fan disintegrating into the surround and alternator.

Just swap it out ASAP.

Yeah, the Tsunami had alot of people worried, myself included. One of my best friends just moved his whole family to Okinawa recently and I was very worried about them.

Little progress on the RS project due to much stress at work and a desperate need for sleep/rest.........
Plus I still need the bright front windshield trim as well as a windshield so I can get my glass in and finish the interior.

I'm looking in the classifieds as of now.

It would be interesting to do some forensics on that after you swap it out. Carefully drill out the rivets and see if there's a casting flaw or piece of swarf thats been in there since day one, or some of that famous Hawaiian corrosion pushing out.

regards,
Phil

I don't know if it would help in this case because the situation is different, but when sheet metal grows a crack on aircraft (or elsewhere), the stopgap method of avoiding more damage is to drill a "stop hole" at the pointy end of the crack. The crack (in sheet metal, anyway) generally will then stop advancing.

If you intend to drive the car at all, I would at least drill such a hole.

Good luck with it.

Thanks Jerome, that seems like a good short term solution. I'm fortunate to have another vehicle as a daily, so this one will sit out for awhile.
Might be a good time for me to drop the engine anyway and fix the oil consumption issue(valve guides).

Tom,

Cars only start acting up when you are babying them, put a band aid on it or some JB weld and go drive the dog snot out of it.

I have an extra SC fan if you need it.

Did you see my video?

Shane, I did see your video and quite frankly, I'm jealous

I gotta give John M. a call this week to see if he has some parts for my RS.

I may take you up on the offer for the fan.

I'm surprised I had any time to do the valves this weekend..........work is nuts right now and I'm quite burned out on working on cars..................

I wonder if you have huge corrosion between the steel and mag? That could make it bulge out..

It's as if a bolt or screw got jammed between the fan and alternator.

I'd drill that hole at the end of the crack as a stop-gap measure until you get a new fan.

Have to put in the door seals and send her over to Golden as David has my door panels/tops. After that, I have to send it in to the paint shop to fix a boo boo I did to the cowl panel paint as I was adjusting the hood.

Installed the dash, seats, door trim, door handles, glass, trunk seals, Weissach lid... about a month ago.

Looks like intergrainular corrosion, common issue caused by impurities when cast. Change the fan,as it will come apart at some time. Probably causing damage that will be costly to repair.
