Factory speaker question...?
Newly purchased 88 3.2 CE (Diamond Blue etc...), want to update sound system. The doors had old worn out 5" plus holes and grills for tweeters. However, there are no wires that I can see without removing panel, nor any evidence that there ever were tweeters in the doors. >>> Is it likely that the hole and grills were there for the tweeters but they weren't installed because the option was not chosen? And consequently that there are no wires for the separate tweeters?
I would like to be able to put separate tweeters and mids with active crossovers in but do not want the installers having to run wires if not there from factory. |

In the stock 2-way spkr setup there was a crossover behind a cavity in the door pocket assembly. The wire for the tweeter ran between the door metal and the door panel. You may find in buried there. Hope this info helps.

I have an 89 Coupe and replaced the current 5 1/4 speakers and found no wiring either for the tweeters ...
Perhaps the PO removed everything when he replaced the speakers, you would have to check the color codes of the wires going to the plug that connects to the radio.Luckily for me,the guy had spliced into the original plug when the radio was replaced ! Maybe the tweeter wires were pulled out altogether ... Cheers ! Phil

Thanks guys,
Its perplexing as the old speakers were fried and worthless but still in there, so seems like if were tweeters were in there they would still be there too... Next is a mirror to poke around and then panel removal. I just really dont trust anyone (at least around here) to run wires if needed, correctly. (ie removal door pins etc..) Time to poke is at hand. |

I don't think that, in 'stock' form, there were component-style speakers until 1990. I think that 5-inch speaker, coax, is all you get. I could be wrong, though.
Take a picture and post it!

panel removal is easy. a few phillips screws, a couple of allen bolts and it's gone. you don't need to unhinge the doors to run new speaker wire. i fit a set of 12g and 16g using a coat hanger and a lot of thinking. ran it up into the trunk then into the fender to the door via some openings i found. not that hard to do, but it is a bit of a pain.

I replaced my sound system recently. After weeks of speculating why the front door speakers don't work, it turns out the crossovers were bad (which allows component sound). After the crossovers were removed the speakers worked again. Now replacing the speakers (with new crossovers) and stereo were a whole different story altogether. Make sure the doors are re-installed properly afterwards (especially for the side door pockets), as the bolts/screws that hold them there may be over 20 years old.
