try again.. Has anybody installed an opening vent window in 84-89

I searched but could not find. Somewhere last year I read on this forum that a pelican installed an opening vent window or whatever the small triangle window is called in door.

I have an 86 without A/C in Florida and would like to know how this was done

I did not read the thread you mentioned but what probably was done was an early window frame assembly was installed in the later car. 911 and 912 coupes through the model year 1968, came with an opening vent window in the doors and since the door window frames will fit later cars, that would be the easiest way, and you could do the same on your 86.

A couple of cautions, however. Your 86 window frames are made from anodized aluminum, black, I believe. Earlier cars with the vent windows had chrome/brass frames except for the 1968 model which had aluminum, so if you're looking to match your other windows, you will need to seek out the one-year-only aluminum frames from 1968.

Another caution, the vent window frames were all chrome, or anodized aluminum in a silver finish. I believe your 86 has black window frames. If so, you will need to color your vent frames accordingly.

The actual replacement is a relatively simple bolt-on change. It's the matching of materials and finishes that will be the task, though it's not an insurmountable one.

This may be the thread your referring to. If not there is a diagram on post 5 showing the mounting bolts and the clip at the bottom of the front portion of the frame that should help you. It is not hard I just did the reverse of what you want to do.

My C3 targa has black anodized vent windows, so they did exist (at least in '76.) That said, I much prefer the uncluttered view from inside in cars that don't have vent windows. I find them more a nuisance than anything else and wouldn't go through the effort of retrofitting them.

Shane (snbush67) has retrofitted his '78 to have the opening vent windows. I'm sure I recall reading how he did it. If I find the thread, I'll let you know.

I've got a pair of the one year only '68 frames, complete, currently painted black, that I'm willing to sell.

I put a pair of openers in my 83 targa
Same size as the originals.
But if you have to change the rubbers
you have to take the whole frame apart, witch is a pain

but yes should fit no problem

If i remember right,
You have to drill all the rivets out of the frame, so the frame comes apart to remove the glass.
To put back together is the harder part with the new rubbers.
And the size of the rivets cant be too long or will push against the rubber/ glass,
when the frame goes back together

But makes a big difference when done

Mine are on a Targa so only the vent and frame not a full door

It's not that big of a deal. Two screws at the top, two along the front at the base of the window and two at the back base ot the window. You can then seperate all the pieces. Yoy may need to use a plastic scraper or molding tool to gently pry the pieces apart.

You will ahve to remove the frame from the door inorder to get to the screws inorder to disassemble the frame.

Each of the red arrows identifies the two screws that need to be removed inorder to take the ventwindow apart to repalce the seal.

What is even more interesting is that those are the EXACT same screw locations as on a window frame for a 356 from the 50s and early 60s. Not much changed...
