Took my Targa to be dyno'd today....
I'm quite shocked at the numbers. My 911(US, not ROW) is 31 years old now, with over 240,000 miles, and has never had a top end. These days, I mostly autocross it and it bounces off the rev limiter all day long at those events.
I've been running a generic Steve Wong chip now for a number of years and it was a good improvement over the stock 911 chip from the factory. I've had at least one compression check, but years ago - numbers were good then. At some point, Steve hook up some diagnostics and found that the engine was probably running a little lean, but we never did anything about it. Maybe last year, Steve told me he had tweaked a chip for a customer with a similar car and the client reported better fuel mileage, cooler temps, bit better performance. I never did query Steve about getting me one of those chips.... Fast forward to last week. I messaged Steve that I need another stock chip for smog, as I misplaced mine two years ago. I also mentioned that modified chip again. Somehow he talked me into putting my car on a dyno and custom mapping a chip for my car. The big day was today. After a night of no sleep due to worrying about today and a Gremlin that popped up in the 911 last night. Car was okay to drive for the 80 mile round trip, so with no sleep and front tires that are not balanced, I made the trek. Another client was up first with his race 911 and was having problems (and took forever), I started to stress even more, as his problem could very well be my problem as well - similar engines. I'm also stressed, since I always worry the worst case in everything. Finally it's my dyno time. After warming up the engine it's go time! Temps were 101/102* in the shop, so not fun and not the best atmosphere for testing, but works. The tech starts going through the gears and it's go time!! Nervous, nervous, nervous.... Base run done, numbers come up and..... Any guesses as to what the wheel HP was? I'll update the post in a bit with the base number and final number in a bit. ![]()

89 3.2 - I got 204hp - no cat, 964 cam, stock chip - inertia dyno at Thunderhill. No idea re. the calibration of these machines.

I've got to sleep!
![]() Okay, on my phone, so some pix later... The numbers: Base run - 207 rwhp No big jump after chip tweaking, but I'm happy that my 911 actually was above 200hp to begin with. With ambient air temp at 101*F Steve was able to basically get 210 rwhp. I'm beyond thrilled. ![]() |
