H5 100/80 Hellas - additional relay needed?

Can the 100/80 Hella bulbs be run in the H5s without additional relays being added? Would that be asking for trouble?

I wouldn't run them in H5's. H5's are plastic and they could melt the housing. H4's could handle them though since they're metal. Either way you would need relays. STOCK bulbs need relays for that matter. Without relays, you will eventually fry your turn signal stalk.

I installed relay's when i put H5's in my SC .... I am only running the Sylvania silver-stars but the beam pattern is great and am very happy with the light output ....

I can't think of an argument against relays ... but th 100/80 bulbs I honestly don't know ....

Every Porsche needs headlight relays.....it's simply dumb to force all the headlight wattage, even stock, thru the dinky column switch which ultimately fail. Stock Porsche...idiots electrically

Also watch out for the connectors in the H5 socket. It uses a little 1/8" blade connector so it needs to be perfectly clean and TIGHT. I melted a couple of them. Use a little screw driver to increase the preload of the female part of the connector and I recommend using a dielectric grease to keep even a hint of corrosion from popping up.

Finally got smart and upgraded to euro H4s. That is a GREAT upgrade.
Oh... And relays all around. As Wil said: Take the load out of those expensive switches even if you have stock wattage bulbs.

Are the rings different for the H4s... in other words, will swapping light assembly out require different rings?

Without a doubt install the relays. Cheap price to insure your headlights don't melt and your high beam stalk doesn't burn out.

The PO of my '89 Carrera used 100's and melted the connectors and bulbs on both sides. I had to replace both H5's, installed high temp connectors, and installed the relay kit.

A $30 relay kit would have saved me a lot of $$$.

I ran 80/100s for 4 years in the H5s and never had an issue with the heat melting anything except the connector. The extra light really helped make up for the crappy beam pattern.
Then I got smart and put in H4s. So much better.

I've used both Bosch and Hella H4's for years on various vehicles for over 30 years, the quality seems to be a toss up. The Bosch set up for the 911 is more a lot more expensive but I think far more attractive than the "sugar scoop". I don't think the Hella or Bosch "conventional" (sugar scoop) lights give up anything performance wise to the Bosch 911 "Euro". From what I understand Daniel Stern, sells a harness that can take those "hyper bulbs" that can be used in all of the H4 alternatives. I just recently found out that my 911 didn't come with relays (thanks Wil), I never looked....just assumed they were there. My car is in storage at this point and the relays are on order from our host. Cheers

Danial Stern Lighting is a great sorce for lighting and information, you will also see a section on his site on adding (and how to) relays. He hs been one of the good guys for many years.
As said previously, ALL Porsche's need them.

H4s are a fabulous upgrade - I agree 100% with the above statement. They perform well and look good. They also take (directly) the xenon bulbs offered here on Pelican.

Yes, get/add a relay kit, definitely - no debate required. IIRC the JT West Engineering kit is about 25 bucks and is a quality upgrade - I have it on all my cars now.

Ok then, the H4s go on my to do list. New windshield seal goes in Monday. And Targa Dan has sent out a front targa seal that is also on my list - - - ever growing list! But darn, seeing well at night is important.
