Front Caliper Inspection

Decided to reseal the front calipers (65k mi.) yesterday. Here's some pictures of the front caliper bores.

Inner pistons wanted to slide right out. Outers were pretty stubborn and didn't want to come out. Had to crank up the press. to 75 psi (way more than I felt comfortable with) to get those outer ones out. Sounds like a firecracker when those things come out. Word to the wise. Wear eye protection when doing this and have the pistons blocked with pieces of wood and clamps. The pistons come out of the bores in a BIG hurry. Can get pretty dangerous if you get careless/impatient.

These things are toast. Open the wallet. The bores are scored pretty good. You can slightly feel the scoring with your fingernail. The caliper bodies are not bad looking. No rust or leakage. Only the dust boots were a little tore up, but I didn't expect the bores to be ruined like this. If anybody has any signs of brake dragging (my right front would groan a little when slowly turning right) you may have calipers like these. Kinda sucks really. Based on the exterior appearance, I wouldn't have expected the calipers to be garbage.

Any opinions? Brakes are too important to take any chances.

What are you going to do?
Upgrade (930s or C2/C4) or stick with standard.

I have heard mention of some places that restore calipers like this. They bore them out and then sleeve them to the specs. Anyone had experience with this? Seems better than tossing the calipers...

It'd be nice to have the 930 or Bill Verburg setup. I can't justify the cost based on how my car is used. Just a street car with occasional (eventually) track visits. I'm sure standard is currently quite sufficient.

Kiwior mentioned the same thing. I don't know offhand of any places that do this. Seems reasonable to bore and sleeve. Probably only practical for a distributor selling rebuilt/remanufactured calipers. Thing is, if it's more than $150 to do both calipers, i'll pay a little more for the NEW calipers as I can source them for around $150 ea.

Just thought i'd post the pictures for all to see.

Thanks
